Adarky - Don't Just Block Ads, Show Whatever You Want!

adarkyTonight at the NY Tech Meetup, Adarky presented their revolutionary, new service. I will start by referring to the questions that came after the presentation. Someone asked what the difference between Adarky and typical ad blockers is. Presenter Steve Spurgat apparently has no issues with ad blockers and explained that if people can block ads, it's the same when they use Adarky.

It appears what Adarky does is let you remove ads on a Web page, and put whatever images you would like in their place. Oh and you can share "ads" with your friends. So if you follow me on Adarky, you will see my images in place of ads on Web sites. Doesn't that sound exciting? I am guessing Scott doesn't consume much media on a daily basis.

Here's Scott's presentation on Adarky:

So wait this service strips out all ads on a page and replaces them with my social networking content?

Does that mean when you go to a porn site you may see a picture of your mom and under it see that she is unwilling recommending the plush doll or pink flesh toy?

Now that is an ad I wont forget - LoL

Social advertising....hmmmm

I was at the meet-up and also thought this was an interesting service but am not sure they have thought through the legal issues. They kept referencing ad blocker but, while ad blocker hasn't been taken down, it hasn't been challenged in court and may prove not to be legal.

There biggest struggle though will be to get the average person to use this. Unlike TV and radio commercials, ads on the internet don't really bother the average user; it's not a significant pain point which is why none of my "normal" friends use the ad blocker add-on.
