Alltop Is Tops On Google

AlltopBack in April we wrote about Flock partnering with Alltop to create a green version of the social media browser that includes Alltop as the default start page. Today SEO blogger Neil Patel has some stats on what type of rankings Alltop has in Google in the year after launch. It’s pretty damn impressive – especially considering that there’s no content on the site – just links.

For example, search for moms in Google and Alltop ranks 1st. How many sites (including NY’s own CafeMom) wouldn’t die for that ranking? Other notable rankings include:

  • oddities: 2
  • egos: 4
  • lifehacks: 5
  • celebrities: 6
  • dads: 7
  • venture capital: 7
  • teen news: 10
  • humor: 11
  • career: 11
  • fashion: 13
  • mac news: 13
  • small business: 25
  • world news: 28
  • seo: 28
  • politics: 29
  • autos: 29
  • food: 31

Check out the entire list on Pronet where Neil also looks at why Alltop ranks so well. We are listed on the social media page and I’d say we see about 5-6 visitors a week from the listing. I am guessing that categories like celebrities and egos do much better and drive more traffic.

I guess we could start a discussion around whether Alltop should be sharing whatever revenue they earn with the content publishers, you know the ones who make the content that appear on Alltop. Looks like master SEO Calacanis has some competition now!

  1. Wow those are some nice placements!

The fact they the rss links render HTML and not ajax/JS certainly don’t hurt their rankings.

you scare me a little sean – whenever i say mahalo or calacanis you mysteriously appear within moments!

what do you mean – I don’t see any rss feeds?

  3. We have a norad like setup to monitor the interetz! Actually I just found this one via my reader. :)

Re. rss feeds. Since they are pulling in content via RSS there are a few ways to do this. The Ajaxy or Javascript methods are bad for SEO. Outputting the content as standard HTML which they do here, is very good for SEO. Google reads this content and notices how often the site updates and boosts accordingly.

Commander Fondue and First Chief Taurus on duty, Sir!

Yea, I also noticed he is scraping a bit of the content – which he includes in "hidden" div elements – this certainly can’t hurt either – you only see the content if you mouseover an item but Google sees it at all times.

The rev share is an interesting question. I found centernetworks only because it was listed on originalsignal.com. I’m not sure they make any rev but I click through to your site to read the article and, of course, see your ads… will you be paying them a referral fee? :)

Actually, I was so impressed with the discovery aspect originalsignal and popurls, that I started a site – dealarmy.com – for shopping & deals. It’s not planned to be a business, it’s just a site to help people find deals.

I guess google is being fooled into thinking that alltop owns that content.

also should I start commenting in friendfeed now as it appears above the site comments…

  7. centernetworks says:

    no please no

the idea that google is being fooled is very interesting

That is really interesting. But I don’t understand how alltop work so well and a site like http://web20.originalsignal.com/ doesn’t.

  9. centernetworks says:

Tim – I agree. While Kawasaki says Alltop is like popurls, it’s really an exact copy of originalsignal. The difference is that Alltop has "star" power that OS doesn’t. I like the guys a lot at OS and popurls.

What we should learn from this is that star power can win – there are plenty of examples out there now :)

    I have a better idea!
Hardcode FULL(!) Ads-FREE content in HTML page!
