Amazon Web Services Video Overview
Allen Stern - April 24th, 2008
Amazon Web Services evangelist Mike Culver recently traveled to Switzerland and met with a group of students at WebTuesday Zurich. He spoke for 90 minutes about the various Amazon Web Services (AWS): S3: Simple Storage Service, EC2: Elastic Compute Cloud, SQS: Simple Queue Service, SimpleDB: Simple Database. If you are interested in an overview of how the Amazon Web Services work, the video below is well worth the time to view and will give you the basic knowledge to speak intelligently about the services. One note, the pricing has changed since Mike’s presentation – view the updated pricing here.
Some interesting notes:
- as of January 2008, 14 billion objects have been stored on AWS
- discusses SmugMug’s use of AWS
- talks about the difference between AWS and scaling a Web site and server excess capacity
- shows Mozilla and their peaks and valleys and how to deal with the issue
- he stresses that AWS lets developers spend time innovating and making money
Thanks to Corsin Camichel for passing along the video.
