AOL To Employ Yahoo Strategy of Multiple Site Launches
Bloomberg is reporting that AOL will launch 12 new content sites this year. The 2008 goal might pass 2007’s launch of 20-30 content sites. AOL recently launched a new home site and a mobile software platform.
AOL reported that they are the category leader in many of the content categories they operate in. While AOL declined to comment on what categories the new sites will operate within, you can be sure that they will hit the areas where online advertising provides the most return — gaming, women’s, health and fitness, etc. At least that’s what I would imagine they will do.
Let’s hope that AOL is doing more strategy work than the way Yahoo has been launching content sites as of late using the "throw a lot at the wall and keep what sticks" method.
