AOL launches Fanhouse, a sports blog

Earlier today, AOL launched FanHouse, basically a sports blog. Each NFL and NCAA team will have a dedicated blogger. This continues to demonstrate that 2006 is the year of the blog.

A snippet from the release:

AOL.com today announced the launch of FanHouse, a new series of blogs that builds upon AOL Sports' strong blogging community and connects football fans across the country. Recognizing that 32 million Americans read blogs*, AOL has created over 75 blogs dedicated to individual NFL teams and NCAA football teams, and covering the entire spectrum of football - from fantasy to league news to NFL gossip. Each team will have a dedicated blogger providing up-to-the-minute updates on players and teams.

"There is no community more passionate or dedicated than sports fans, and our goal is to create a Web 2.0 atmosphere where sports enthusiasts can meet and talk about everything from game stats to players' salaries, fantasy and more," said Neal Scarbrough, Editor and General Manager, AOL Sports. "This marks a turning point for AOL Sports as we expand our social networking platform and enhance traditional sports coverage by providing a comprehensive platform for fans to discuss news and events of their favorite teams in an interactive forum and experience."

What's interesting to note is the Web 2.0 and social networking comments. AOL clearly has invested in this with their new Netscape platform and are now moving into social networking on the sports side.

Now the Giants vs. Eagles will take on a Web 2.0 spin! I can't wait! Go Giants!

Chris - September 20, 2006
Being a sports and MySpace.com junkie, I decided to spend some time reviewing all of the sports social networking web sites I could find: playnotwatch.com, pickspal.com, fanspot.com, sixer.tv, tiredandtested.com, fannation.com, sportsmates.com, fanpage.com, and takkle.com. Wasn’t impressed by a lot, but through my searches, I actually found the Web site that tops them all: playcoed.com -

PlayCoed, a sports social networking company that handles online payment processing, merchandising, and advertising looks to be headquartered out of Denver (a big sports town in it’s own right) and already has clients such as Bally Total Fitness, Lucky Strike Lanes, 24 Hour Fitness, numerous sports and social clubs across the U.S., over 1,000 locations, 600 tournaments, 2,500 leagues, and over 15,000 users. I did a search for them at MySpace.com/PlayCoed to return over 8,000 friends just in Denver. Simple addition showed over 25,000 friends across MySpace. An Alexa.com ranking confirmed the company gets more clicks than any of the Web sites mentioned above.

It even looks like the company handles online registration for charities such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, The United Way, and The MS Foundation. I really had to do some digging, as apparantly they don’t like to brag. I even called their main number and spoke with a female who was rather polite… and modest.

This certainly has me curious to find out more and if they have a hurling league just for me.

since chris h's comment is pretty obviously a plug from a playcoed insider, i thought i might as well do some astroturfing of my own. i really don't see why a site like fannation gest lumped in with things like takklec.com (focused on high school sports), playnotwatch.com (finding teams and leagues to play in) and playcoed (same). what we're doing at fannation is creating a destination for sports fans to follow their favorite teams and players and connect with other fans. it's a completely different application, even though it is sports related.

so if you're looking to get involved in playing in your hometown, by all means, go to playcoed.com, or playnotwatch.com, or eteams.com, or any of the others. but if you're looking for a great site to get sports news, connect with other fans, write your own blog or play simple fantasy games that's free--both free of cost, and free from the control of lots of editors and corporate concerns--please check out fannation.com. the site is still new, but we're adding and improving daily, and we would love to get feedback on how to make it better by providing features that fans really want.

PlayCoed.com is the MySpace of rec sports. I play in Miami. Reminds me a lot of Facebook. Much better than takkle or sportsvite.
