AOL updates start page for AOL users

Allen Stern - January 20th, 2007

AOLI realized something was up when I logged into AOL today. I have been an AOL customer since 1993 and always kept the account for two reasons; the ability to check client web sites using the AOL browser (before it become standard) and because my AOL email address still is the main hub for some of my ecommerce activities.

AOL has always featured a start page when you sign on to AOL. When they created a new start page for AOL.com, I knew it wouldn't be long before that was on the AOL service as well. Took longer than I expected, but it is here. This should provide a bit of cost savings for AOL as they won't have to manage two start pages. So in summary, the new AOL main service start page is now the same as AOL.com. Check out AOL's information about the new start page.

When I open aol mail on my macbook, the message and/or image is crowded down to about a measily, microscopic 10% of the page. Is that what everyone means by the “welcome page being too large”?

  2. Brenda J Edwards says:

I don’t remember exactly when it happened but I don’t like the large screen. How can it be corrected?

You are wonderful, wonderful…..and I thank you so very much for helping out.

As much as I hate, despise, abhore, totally find it my “bête noire” when I saw the new AOL screen …I was furthermore frustrated to a point where I wanted to put my fist through it because of the stupid in your face size…….man, they goofed royally this time…yuck, ick, blahhhhh…ptoui, to the new AOL sign on screen….yours sincerely Micheline

Thank you so much anonymous! I changed the text size to medium and it’s fixed! I can’t believe I’ve been battling this too large screen size for so long and it’s such an easy fix! Thank you for sharing!!

Okay, I’ve read all the comments/complaints about the AOL’s new oversized Welcome Page. I think I’ve found the solution.

    First open Internet Explorer.

On the right side of the page, find the icon for “Page”.

Click on “zoom”. I chose 100%

Next Click on “Text Size”. I chose “smaller”.

Everything changed on my Explorer page.

When I went to my AOL Welcome Page, everything was back to normal.

I was a much happier camper after this.

I hope you all find success following these steps.

I am reading your posts with great interest, because I, too, don’t like the welcome screen size-I find it too small LOL! I discovered that changing the font size in IE to medium made the font stop being all over the top of itself on certain web pages–THANK GOD! I can’t figure out how it suddenly changed all by itself to LARGE!! Anyway, this post is to ask if anyone else thinks that many of the problems (except the stupid welcome screen) are happening mostly to the folks who don’t pay for AOL? I haven’t had any of the other difficulties myself, and I am still paying for the AOL. Also, my experience with online help has been extremely good, so maybe they are only serving the suckers like me who still give them money? I pay 9.95 a month and have DSL with AT&T for an addititional 9.95 a momth. As they say, if it says free service, what they mean is “free of service”. What does everyone else think?

My AOL Welcome page has not changed in about 5 days. No news, all the same stuff “Here’s to Good Health” (Photo of a girl sneezing into a tissue), “How Memories Are Made Better”, (with a photo of a digital camera) and “Making the Most of Your Money” (with a hand full of dollars in the photo). It never changes, What’s up?????

  9. Anonymous says:

The welcome screen is way to large, please if anyone knows how to correct this problem, please advise. Thank you

I think Aol Stinks with in the years, it has slow down my computer, also with this new page i can not read my mail. I like my old page, where i was able to read my mail in a full screen.

THANK YOU ANONYMOUS ON JULY 26!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have saved me from going postal!! I have had to deal with this enormous screen for over a year. (my kids computer for the last several months…so would have gone postal much sooner if i hadn’t bought a laptop for myself!) going to internet explorer, click on view and setting the font to medium was all it took! it was set on LARGEST. i have no idea how that happened in the first place. just glad it’s fixed now. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!

I cannot even get the New welcome screen to load completely, cannot access anything on the internet through the aol browser. NO images are loading in my emails and cannot access links in my emails. Cannot access aol finance, aol news, etc. etc. etc. What the hell is going on?? I am really glad I did move over to the free service.

  14. Anonymous says:

I e-mailed you a while ago that I would change to MSN if I could not get the old welcome screen back…. instead of making what you have more efficient you focused on redesigning the entire gizmo and there are items too difficult to find… NO EXCUSES… I WANT THE OLD SCREEN OR I AM GONE AFTER 10 YEARS WITH AOL

  15. Anonymous says:

don’t delete aol but just uninstall it and then re install. thats what the aol tech told me to do to solve the proble.

  16. Joyce says:

I too had the problem of a huge welcome screen. I finally figured out how to fix it. Go to Internet Explorer. Click on the VIEW tab, then text size. Mine was set on large. I changed it to medium, then rebooted. When I signed back on to Aol. the problem was corrected. I hope this helps those of you with similar problems.

I can not find the reduce icon on my welcome screen to reduce the size of this window so I can put it back to its normal size.

Can somebody please let me know how to reduce my welcom screen

  18. E.D says:

somehow got latino aol. how do I get the home page back in english?

  19. Anonymous says:

Thanks AOL – you’ve done it again. Went ahead and “fixed” something that wasn’t broken. I hate the “new and improved” large welcome screen. And to boot, you offer help in decreasing the size but have no icon to do that. So HELP – how do we decrease the size…

Leave these things alone or ask the subscribers for once what THEY think before you do these things.

  20. Anonymous says:

I had the same problem – one day my AOL screen size was huge and I could not figure out how to get it back to normal. Then a friend told me this: go into Internet Explorer from your desktop. Across the top: click on View. The dropdown menu will appear. Click on: Font Size: set it to Medium. That’s it. (When I went in, it was set on: Largest.) As soon as I switched it to: Medium, I logged back into AOL and my screen size was back to normal.
I hope this helps you too.

I do not like the size of the new Welcome Screen. I have tried to fix it in settings but am unable. Everyone keeps telling me to give up AOL because you download things onto our computors without permission etc. I have also been charged for services/products that I did not authorize and the funds were taken from my checking acct. I have been with
AOL since the early 90′s and have liked it because of the buddy list etc. but I am really getting frustrated with the services or lack there of. to the comsumer. It is not like there is not another internet service out there to use but I really would like to stay with AOL if they would just think about the consumer and our needs.

  22. lori says:

this really really bites….how do u get free aol? without having to use them for dial up?

  23. Pat says:

I cannot find the icon to reduce the size of the welcome screen as shown. Can someone let me know how to reduce the size of this window to put it back the way it was?

I like AOL but do not like the new welcome screen. Please tell me how to reduce it.

  24. Anonymous says:

WHY DOESN’T THE WELCOME SCREEN UPDATE DAILY. IF I LEAVE MY AOL OPEN FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS THE DATE REMAINS SAME AS WHEN I FIRST LOGGED IN. IF I GO TO AOL AND I OPENED IT ON 7/23/2007 AND I OPEN AGAIN ON THE 7/28/2007 GUESS WHAT? THE DATE STILL SHOWING IN THE WELCOME SCREEN IS 7/23/2007.

  25. Robert DiMaggio says:

I too do not care for the new welcom screen, and would love to have the old one back,or find a way to reduce the sise of this one. I have had AOL since 1998 and have always liked it,but do not like the new welcome screen, thank you.

  26. Fran says:

I have searched high and low to decrease the screen size… I HATE
the new HUGE size…. There is no icon where your Welcome Screen info
    states to decrease the size…

    HELP< HELP!!!!!!

  27. jenisiss62 says:

When I sign on to AOL – I get the old screen, which still shows a date (and all the front page articles) from July 31st. The only way to change it is to either opt to view the “new welcome screen”, or change my view to the small business version. I even updated my AOL version to the 9.0 VR and it didnt’ change. The clock on my computer is right, but the screen is not. I’ve searched and searched and found no answers online, and I’m not a paying user since my access is through DSL. Is anyone else having this problem?

  28. Sarah says:

I’m having the same problem. I’ve been stuck on July 18 since, well, July 18. It’s now Aug 2. It’s enough to drive you crazy. And NO ONE at AOL will help unless you are a paying member (which I was for over 10 years, but am not now).

  29. Anonymous says:

All of a sudden, last week – mid-Oct – I no longer log-on and know what’s going on in the news. The welcome screen never changes. There are no headlines, nothing current. What is going on? Is it fixable? How? I miss getting the headlines.

  30. Anonymous says:

I absolutely HATE this huge welcome screen. How can I reduce it? Bring back the old welcome screen PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

I have just the opposite problem my screen is to small

Can anyone help me out – I hate having to scroll up and down / left to right just to see what is on my home page, it is annoying!!! PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!

Hard to cancel or get refunds for trial use, clogs up your computer, almost impossible to get rid of even once it’s uninstalled, no customer support unless you’re a paying subscriber–I don’t get it–why does anyone use AOL at all?

  35. Anonymous says:

I know the majority of AOL customers are baby boomers(like me) but come on, does it have to be so BIG!!! It says under Welcome Screen that you can decrease the size but a change icon is yet to be found.

  36. Anonymous says:

tried to recovere nomal size welcome screen!!! I nwoulod appreciate your help. thank you.

  37. Anonymous says:

Why, why, why is it so big. I can now read it from across the room. Please ‘change the screen’. You dropped the “change this screen:” option. How can I EASILY decrease the size.

  38. Anonymous says:

I have been with aol since 2003, and i think it stinks. i do not like to have to scroll up and down to see it. i liked the old one where everything was right in front of me. Ever since they changed it, it seems like i have had nothing but problems getting around, things won’t load right and if they do, they load much slower. Also every once in a while my tool bar disappears for no reason. Just signing on to aol takes alot longer. I want the old screen back, but when i complained to aol about it they said i was stuck with it and that everyone would get the new screen sooner or later. I am going to cancel my aol membership, and i hate to do that, because i have really enjoyed it over the years.

  39. centernetworks says:

Yep – I don't think they realize that not everyone has a 30" lcd monitor — my mother hates it too.

  40. Anonymous2all says:

I have a 19 inch monitor, Home XP and neither of this matters. AOL is not very knowledgeable about it’s own product, simply put!
They cannot answer simple questions concerning any issues about AOL. This is why I don’t bother to ask them for help anymore.
There is a problem with the Welcome Screen and it matters not what resolution size, or font type used. This being the case, you would have to change it constantly to suit AOL and why should we do this while paying for their services?
I like AOL for certain reasons, but their technical services are useless.
You need to live with this rediculous new WELCOME SCREEN SIZE, or play their way and keep changing the resolutions to satisfy your needs. It’s idiotic to say the least. Those telling you they don’t have issues apparently haven’t installed the latest AOL version.

I agree with the person who would like to sue, yet it would be AOL, not the tech’s. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, or in this case learn much from the master.

  41. James N. Stine Jr. says:

I would like to increase the size of the welcome screen?

  42. Anonymous says:

Regarding the AOL start up screen, you’ve gone from one extreme to the opposite now with today’s new very small screen with minimal info. Should have stayed with the original “midsize” info. screen!

  43. Anonymous says:

AOL’s services are free now. All you have to do, is go through the grueling process of calling them, and telling them that you don’t want to pay for the monthly fee anymore. Their internet and email services are FREE!!! I was paying $25 for a year, and didn’t have to be doing it. Just an FYI.

  44. Anonymous says:

I absolutely cannot stand the new welcome screen. the text is to large and makes it frustrating to find things. when are we going to take the customer in to mind. I liked the format of the old welcome screen and this new one makes me want to give up AOL. where is the key to decrease the size of the welcome screen

  45. Anonymous says:

I can not stand the new welcome screen it is very hard to read. I don’t want to have to scroll up and down to just glance at the welcome page when I first sign online, it’s annoying. We have dial-up and have no other choice because we live way………out in the country and can not get anything else, so we have to pay for it. Can you help?

  46. cindy says:

I dislike the bigger the life screen..i in the setting it say you can decrease the screen size,…but i have tryed everything to decrease the welcome screen size…
this really is starting to pee me off since i been paying around 30 dollars for aol since 1998..

i want the welcoming screen smaller…and i want my aol search bar back on the welcome screen, not on the bottom tool bar…

  47. Rita Kahane says:

How do I get updated welcome page

  48. Anonymous says:

Why can’t you help us get the screen size so we can actually use it AOL? We have been very loyal to you and now you do this and won’t even give us a solution to fix the problem? I don’t get it? Please help us fix this mess of a welcome screen. That is the very least you can do.

  49. robert shells says:

I DO NOT LIKE THIS NEW WELCOME SCREEN, I GET TIRED OF SCROLLING DOWN JUST TO FIND WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR. WHY DID’NT YOU KEEP THE OLD SCREEN. NOW INTERNET EXPLORER IS PERFECT FOR MY TASTE. PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK.
