Using their traffic logs is a good idea, but it would be a less effective strategy with the larger publishers. I think that another good way to rebuzz your company would be to "accidently" reveal info on upcoming developments. If you changed your home page for a half an hour suggesting a new feature and then quickly changed back, I bet that someone would make a screen shot and feel like they scooped the site on something. The harder you make someone work for the story, the less likely they will think its a trick.
