Hulu Streams 235 Million Videos in October; Sixth Most Popular U.S. Video Service
by Allen Stern on December 9th, 2008
comScore is out with their latest U.S. online video report today. Back in May comScore listed Hulu for the first top in the top 10 with 88 million videos viewed. Today Hulu has moved up in comScore’s online video report for October to sixth position with 235 million videos viewed. Pretty amazing growth for a service some called crap before Hulu actually launched.
Other notable facts from the report:
- YouTube passed the 100 million U.S. visitor mark for the month of October
- ESPN listed in tenth position for views - I wonder how many of those views come from their auto-launcher on the espn.com home page (hate that feature)
- All of Google’s video sites pushed out more than 5.3 billion video views for October

Hulu’s growth is easy to explain :
- quality of content
- exclusivity of content
and also a clean user interface/experience
Allen, is it just my connection or is Hulu.com having trouble handling all this bandwidth? I’ve noticed that shows on Hulu can be unwatchable some evenings. I’m not sure they’re buffering correctly.
Andrew, I don’t really watch Hulu that much but will try to test it out tonight and see if I get the same results as you are.
the interesting question is whether the ads will be effective on hulu - apparently people said they would rather play a 3 minute ad before a show - well that’s easy right? start the ad, minimize the window - go about your business and come back in 3 minutes.
what is hulu going to do to make sure people view the ads?
After using Boxee I see even more future potential for Hulu but i still don’t think they have found the right ad model. Lets face it when it comes to video product placement is going to become more and more important.
It’s been tough watching the Daily Show lately.
