cooperBricolage Needs a New Home
In late July I met with Sanford Dickert near NYU/Cooper Union to discuss his new coworking space called CooperBricolage (cooBric). It seems that the bar that the space was located in has restructured/renovated and cooBric is looking for a new home. If you have any ideas on space in NYC, send the cooBric team a note.
cooBric is a different type of coworking — i.e. it’s located in a bar with small bar tables and short hours. My concern (along with Till’s) is that the tables are so small, can you really get work done this way? Sanford believes yes, I think it’s an interesting alternative to the more traditional coworking say at Independents Hall in Philadelphia.
Dan also notes that the signin list only showed a few people a day and that more people are needed to show that coworking can work in NYC. I agree and would only add that cooBric didn’t have enough time to make it work. Personally I wish they would change the name to something less "educational". But with Sanford’s passion around the space, I am sure that he will make it work.
And I can assure you, CenterNetworks is ready to move into a coworking space.

Learning is the key, right Professor? :) My advice is to look at a space that has great mass transit options because that is part of the success formula. I know you mentioned alphabet city, but the transit isn’t so great there. So if you feel like you can fill it with locals, then it works. But I wouldn’t travel there each day because it could mean a bus-train-bus or bus-train-walk scenario.
The other key is the time – what are the hours for the space, etc.
If you stick with the cooBric name, I think it’s ok. Not sure people will know what it means but we could probably figure something out Web 2.0ish plus coworking-ish.
Allen – it has been a great learning experience – and the CooBric Comm Team is still moving forward. We have already had some conversations with other providers – and are looking into a way to work with other companies that already have space that needs subletters. We have met with some cafe owners and explained our community’s needs – and will have some news soon.
One thing – I, too, did not like the use of the small tables – but people felt more comfortable in using them to engage others with spaces that were in close proximity. If there was a need for more table space, then the back tables (designed for parties of 2 and 4) were always there.
And, one last question: “educational”? The team thought cooBric was better than cooperBricolage. Any suggestions? We are always interested in feedback…
