Day 2 – Facebook Down
Yesterday I was the first (and one of the few) to write about Facebook being down and out of service. From everything I could gather, it seemed like if you were west of the Mississippi river in the U.S. or in another country, Facebook was out of service for a good while.
Also similar to yesterday’s outage, the Facebook social buttons (e.g. Like button) are out of service.
My favorite note about the outage comes from Twitter user Fake Dispatch who notes, “BREAKING WORK TIP: Do not be the first one in your office to announce that Facebook is down.”
Update: Facebook has posted regarding today’s outage. The posting is VERY technical in its discussion of what happened.
One difference with yesterday for me is that yesterday I received no connection to Facebook at all. Today I received the following message:

The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server.

Facebook is still down here in San Antonio, TX, 10/22/10 at 2:32pm. I have tried 3 different internet connections and all responses are about the same: as soon as I click on “Logon” it becomes very slow and eventually returns “This webpage is not available”…

Facebook was really slow for a little bit around 3 and then didn’t work at all with the DNS failure. I just tried it now at 6:20 and it works fine now. Pennsylvania

According to the Wall Street Journal:
‘Facebook.com is having technical difficulties, affecting both users accessing the social networking site, as well as the “Like” buttons that the social network has populated across the Web.
In a statement, a Facebook spokesman said: “Facebook may be slow or unavailable for some people because of site issues. We’re working to fix this quickly.”
Internet monitoring company AlertSite reported that Facebook started experiencing problems at about 2:30 p.m. Eastern. Between 2:30 and 3:30, Facebook only had 38.46% availability — and response times of up to 60 seconds reported from one of AlertSite’s monitoring locations. It wasn’t immediately clear what was behind the outage.
Facebook also had technical problems on Wednesday, thanks to a third-party networking provider.’

FB down over an hour now, Minneapolis/Saint Paul area of Minnesota. First rec’d msg that the server was not available (I use home computer on Comcast server and I am able to access all my mail sites, etc.). Just now rec’d msg that I had no authorization to enter FB site.
Facebook is down in Florida period, here is you reason….. they are saying alot of different things, however we know what the real reason is, The robert rivera virus, what it is = it looks as if you have a friend request from this person, here is the problem, if you accept you will keep getting request from the same person over and over again, we got over 300 yesterday, it is overloading the servers. We estimate that yesterday there was at least 1 million of these request sent, so add in the 3 weeks prior that this has been happening and there you go. im sure they will get this resolved soon, so just hang on for a bit and you will be good to go. for the people saying they are going back to myspace…. myspace has had alot more problems to date than Fb, keep that in mind before running back to a huge spam site.

I’m in Kamloops, BC and it’s not working on both my laptop, home PC and my Blackberry. In all cases, I’m told that there was an error reaching the server. Tested on BrightHouse (Time Warner) and Century Link (Sprint)
OpenDNS.org reports world wide issues with their DNS, many not responding.
UPDATE, appears to be [sort of] working as of 4:35pm Eastern time.
It’s running very slow, prob from all the back log.
fb keeps messing with the formating and moving the game requests around and seems every time they do the site goes down. why not leave things alone til u know they r working properly then work on things. fl here and day 2 of no fb

This is the response we usually get when attempting to load facebook.
Facebook has been down and out most of the day on all computers and servers, including via blackberry here in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. Oddly, we have been consistently successful with loading 1 of the 5 accounts held by our family. I wonder if his is on a different server?
