Video Interview With The Founders of Drop.io

DropioThis morning I headed down to DUMBO (a neighborhood in Brooklyn) to check out the new Drop.io office. It's a great loft-style space that looks like the team can easily expand past their current headcount.

CN was the first media outlet to cover Drop.io on their alpha launch last November. Drop.io is a private, discreet file sharing service. This means you can share files with only the people you want. The most simple example is a designer who wants to show his or her sketches to their client without putting them on a public file server. Drop.io handles nearly all media types and offers a variety of methods to view the files including rss, mobile and a new embed option for videos.

Drop.io uses a variety of Amazon tools on the backend and in the interview below they note that Drop.io users have already stored several terabytes of data. What makes this even more significant is that Drop.io expires data -- so the reported figures are "active" stats.

One of the issues Drop.io faces is gaining brand awareness. Drop.io may have trouble getting brand recognition becuase its content is all private unlike other file sharing services which promote themselves as people share the content stored on the service.

Darshan and Sam have provided CN with ten free premium upgrade codes. Leave your information in the comments (do not leave your email in the comment, just in the email field) and I will send you an upgrade code.

Check out my interview below with co-founders Darshan Somashekar and Sam Lessin.

Sure, I'd love to check Drop.io out. I'm interested in seeing how it differs from services like yousendit (the immediately-obvious difference is that it lets you specify how far in the future the expiration should be).

I'm not sure why Drop.io would have more trouble gaining brand awareness through sharing than other sites of its type - unless you're comparing it to places like Flickr, where you can browse non-private content?

Another great and useful application!

Another company harnessing cheap data storage and robust internet infrastructure to deliver a practical and useful solution.

Let's hope they make a go of it and the service has some staying power and earning power eventually.

For now, I would very much like to be a premium user...send the upgrade codes my way!

Cheers,
P.

Drop.io has already started making my work easier.
It's simplicity makes using the service a breeze for any one to use.
What does an upgrade add? Any codes left?

This service has been fantastic. My only hiccup with it so far has been garbled characters in pdfs sent using the fax out feature -- I haven't been able to figure out if it is a problem with their backend pdf to tiff/fax utility or with the PDFCreator driver I'm using to generate my pdfs. But other than that it is a phenomenal web app and I can't wait to see what they do next. (Any code left please?)

could i have a code?

It's a fabulous service--the simplicity is the best --everybody else is making things more and more complicated --this service is heading in the opposite direction--the right direction.
Any codes left--it would be great

Are there any codes left? I'd like to have one.
