Encoding.com – Video Encoding Using the Cloud

by Allen Stern - October 2nd, 2008

encoding.comEncoding.com presented today at the BootStrapperSummit in NYC. Below is a video demo from founder Greggory Heil. Basically encoding.com takes video stream encoding and puts it into the cloud. After the demo, an attendee asked what makes encoding.com different than any other video encoding platform. Heil noted that the strength comes from using the cloud for processing; he said it’s faster and more cost effective than other solutions. Heil also noted that they have 500 customers in a variety of sizes currently using the platform.

TechcrunchIT has a good review of the relaunched encoding.com service. Heil saiid they support hundreds of encoding options on their platform.

This is nothing new. Want to compete with Encoding.com? Go out and buy a bunch of Ripcode.com transcoding boxes which are 100% legally licensed, design a simple website for uploading and downloading transcoded media and you’re ready to go. Oh, you want to stream or progressively download? Just leverage Amazon if you’re small and any number of CDN’s if you want true streaming. This company is not ahead of anyone.

Oh this is too rich – as the 8th employee of the original encoding.com founded in 1997 (eventually going public as Loudeye in 2000, and getting bought by Muze and Nokia). Not sure what this says about the state of the current cycle when an idea is completely recycled.

I doubt that transcoding videos fits cloud computing. Raw video files are too large to make it economical to transfer them first to a remote machine for transcoding. And transcoding small files is not a problem anyway.
