Screw Winning The Lottery – Just Make a Facebook App and Get Your Millions Now!

Allen - January 11th, 2008

LottoHow many times have we heard, "all it takes is a dollar and a dream"? This phrase seems to always follow a commercial for the lottery. Of course the odds are that there’s no chance in hell of you winning the big prize but people line up like sheep to try their luck.

Why not take some time and create a Facebook application? The odds might be better to make a quick million. Especially after hearing month after month at the NY Tech Meetup that many of the "hot" apps were created in less than a week.

Facebook analytics company Adonomics (formerly Appaholic) has produced a live list of the top Facebook applications and a variety of stats including valuation. Here are the top 10 apps and their valuations:

  •  FunWall – $28,337,900
  • SuperWall – $25,884,200
  • Top Friends – $22,771,000
  • SuperPoke – $11,516,800
  • Movies – $10,700,800
  • X Me – $9,418,060
  • Likeness – $9,320,420
  • iLike – $7,990,690
  • ComparePeople – $6,658,060
  • Causes – $5,519,010

There are 71 apps listed that have a valuation over $1 million dollars. Are these apps really worth these figures? Do you see any of them being acquired at these valuations?

Tonight’s lottery jackpot is $32 million in case anyone cares.

Facebook apps arent worth very much at all? Why you ask….a few reasons.

    1. When the time is right facebook will re-create the most succesful apps and those will be the ones that get distribution and appear in news feeds.

    2. Facebook has already begun dismanteling the ability to market and monetize your app. They have limited invites, they are lowering the impressions in newsfeeds and they are now removing the bottom apps from the profile page so only the first few apps installed get any viewership.

When you build a business in someone elses backyard, understand that its their BBQ!

As a developer of an application pretty high up in the list (won’t tell you where), I can tell you that our application is going to bring in ad revenue in the lower millions this year. So those valuations aren’t entirely off track.

As stated in our FAQ’s we stand by these valuations and the methodology that we used to arrive at them (see http://blog.adonomics.com/2007/09/24/an-adonomics-valuation-is-the-key-to-not-undervaluing-your-app/).

The comment above also supports the fact that these apps do make money from advertising (another service that Adonomics offers). In addition, a facebook user is worth significantly more than a registered web user. So, acquiring a Facebook app is a quick way for a Web 1.0 company or major brand to obtain a daily connection with millions of users that have opted in to being contacted by the app owner and whose profile page boxes are online billboards telling their friends about the app owner.

Lastly, while creating some of these apps might not be that difficulty, it is non-trivial to support an app with 2 to 20 million installs and 100K to 3 million daily active users. The other reality is that creating a popular facebook app is REALLY HARD. With over 13,000+ shipping apps from 169,000+ developers who’ve looked at Facebook only 146 apps have managed to capture more than 1 million users.

    Thanks,

I am an analytics nut and it’s interesting to dive deep into Facebook app analytics – thanks for putting your service together. It will be interesting to see if the Web 1.0 types or major companies do what you suggest – it makes sense!

But all you have to do is scroll past the next page and you immediately start to see that 99% of the facebook apps are crappy “2gurlz1guy” things.

It’s definitely the platform for achieving rapid distribution. I wonder how long this will be the case though.

I like the idea tossed around over lunch the other day – the super duper poke. Nice.

Good idea I’ll get started right away! :P

You know if you look at the whole report you still have a “no way in hell chance” of making much money doing this.
