Facebook Down?
Update Thursday September 23 – please visit our updated Facebook down page for today.
It appears social networking site Facebook is currently out of action. Reports are coming in rapidly that the site is either completely not loading and/or the service is loading very slowly. I am unable to access Facebook currently from multiple Internet connections. Twitter users are also noting issues connecting to Facebook.
From what I can tell, most of the tweets regarding issues connecting to Twitter are in languages other than English. Also important to note that Facebook social like buttons are also not loading.
My favorite note about the outage comes from Twitter user Fake Dispatch who notes, “BREAKING WORK TIP: Do not be the first one in your office to announce that Facebook is down.”
We have emailed Facebook for more information and will update this post when we hear back.
Update 2:45pm Eastern: My6Sense VP Louis Gray is currently reporting in that Facebook works for him in Silicon Valley.
Update 2: a large percentage of the U.S. based comments are coming from Texas – I wonder if this has anything to do with the SSL outage on Time Warner on Monday?
Update 3: several CN readers seem to suggest it could be some sort of DNS attack. In reviewing the comments, it seems like everyone without access to Facebook is east of California or outside the U.S. The NY Post wonders if this is somehow related to the upcoming Social Network movie.
Update 4: As of 3:35pm Eastern, Facebook is back up for me on multiple connections. You may now stop cleaning your house and resume farming, posting photos and poking.
As always, please report in if Facebook is down for you and also note what you are doing to occupy your time during this outage.

FaceBook is down in western Tennessee also. It was slow yesterday when trying to open my messages (email) on Facebook. This afternoon, I could not open my messages at all and was redirected to the “Home” page; now I can’t access Facebook at all and get the same DNS failure that everone else is getting.
According to the Wall Street Journal:
“Facebook.com is having technical difficulties, affecting both users accessing the social networking site, as well as the “Like” buttons that the social network has populated across the Web.
In a statement, a Facebook spokesman said: “Facebook may be slow or unavailable for some people because of site issues. We’re working to fix this quickly.”
Internet monitoring company AlertSite reported that Facebook started experiencing problems at about 2:30 p.m. Eastern. Between 2:30 and 3:30, Facebook only had 38.46% availability — and response times of up to 60 seconds reported from one of AlertSite’s monitoring locations. It wasn’t immediately clear what was behind the outage. Facebook also had technical problems on Wednesday, thanks to a third-party networking provider”

Already panic in the streets. MArtial Law declared in London and Manchester. BBC News no longer able to communicate with correspondents around the world, or to get TV news footage from mobile phones. Its about time Facebook is down, when the scare was about they thinking of charging a fee per month to use it would have been billions in their pocket. Facebook suddenly quit on my this morning around 10 or 11ish… Actually it was intermittent until around 1:45, and now it’s totally shut down. I’m in Sacramento, Ca. All I can say is… I never had this problem on MySpace… maybe I should switch back to them… Funny, the movie about FB is about to come out… and this happens? It’d be funny if it weren’t so frustrating!

This is a huge wakeup call, people. First of all, we all waste too much time on Facebook, Twitter, etc. By the way, the site IS free, so griping is silly. Facebook is just a big high school cafeteria, nothing more. I think it’s dangerous how much our society is becoming dependent on the Internet and social media. We need to get back to not only using the telephone, but connecting with real people. This concept of collecting friends is out of hand. Facebook has devalued the word “friend.” Get back to your lives. Make a difference in a real way. Last night, I took my friends list from 457 people down to 96 people, and it felt great! There was life before Facebook (for some, it was called Myspace – LOL)… and there will be life after Facebook as the next trend hits. Don’t get caught up in trends. LIVE YOUR LIVES.
Rachel, I have made new friends on Facebook and I am now involved in the happenings of their lives. Plus I have connected with people that I haven’t heard from in years. Not to mention that I started a history site in my hometown and that site is responsible for connecting people together that they have heard from since high school. It is very important to a lot of people and has developed relationships we would never have without it.
I do have to admit though that the obsession of games is getting to me and I don’t play nearly as much as I did when I first started. I am weaning away from them a little at a time, but I wouldn’t give my new friendships up for anything in the world!

I respectfully disagree. I’m from Pittsburgh, PA., but recently made a career move to Detroit, MI. I use facebook to stay in touch with CLOSE family & friends, meanwhile, my phone service is down, and won’t be back on until the 28th. I also use the site to collaborate with colleagues on important, work-related projects (sending files to & from). I don’t “waste too much time on Facebook.” I know what you MEAN though. Some people DO waste time on there. I KNOW what the word “friend” means, and every person on MY list really IS a good friend of mine, who I grew up with, or co-workers. I don’t HAVE hundreds of fake friends cluttering up my list, just because I think they’re cool, or because I WANT to know them. At least if there were a problem in the High School Cafeteria, all of the students would congregate OUTSIDE somewhere (TOGETHER), until the problem is fixed. But without Facebook, where am I supposed to congregate with my family, friends, and important networking partners, who are out of state? (before you answer that — most of the people I’m talking about are NOT on MySpace or Twitter.. Facebook is the most popular site, and it’s where I know how to FIND everyone).. This is 2010, about to be 2011.. We SHOULD have the technology to easily find & communicate with our people, even if we are moved to a different location. I already AM living my life. It’s been down here in Houston for an hour or so, on both my ATT dsl and my iphone. The page will load on the iphone but isn’t updated…it’s stuff from the last refresh. Profile page won’t load on the iphone at all.
As I’m typing this, I see that it loaded on the other open tab…yay! It’s still VERY slow, however. When I click on “older posts” it just spins and spins. And the iphone isn’t updating yet, either. And now it won’t load at all, so we’re back where we started. :(

This is where Roadrunner was trying to hand off to when FB was down. Read who this is and how powerful they are as an integration point for major networks. I have no idea if everyone who had problems getting to Facebook had to go through here, but if they did, it might have been just a glitch or it might have been a major test of effective control over the WEB or Facebook, from this intersecting hub. http://www.robtex.com/dns/dca3.gblx.net.html …. Note that his hub has many different names registered, but they all lead to the same place. Sounds like they are trying to obscure the amount of power there is in one place, by making them all look like different hubs. Like I said, I don’t know, but would not trust anyone on face value nowadays.
I live in Central TX, and Facebook login will not load on the computer. However, I am from Las Vegas, NV and have a Vegas area code on my droid, and I can access Facebook from my phone, although when I tried to post a birthday wish to a friend, it sent my wall post to someone else, and then automatically closed my entire browser on the droid.
Guess it’s time to clean house.

FB is definitely down here in Austin, Texas (ISP -> Time Warner). Clearly the issue is larger than any one service provider, access method or region. I find it difficult to imagine the crash is directly the result of updates Facebook has implemented in the last couple of days, but it may well be the result of hacking exploits made possible by those updates…
Well guess what? FB just successfully came back up for me! Oddly, I’m looking at my newsfeed there and the history of it would indicate there have been a number of people able to access their accounts during the last couple of hours. Strange.

Not to be conspiratorial, because i cannot be sure, but looks like it might be a possible DNS attack. A “tracert” reveals that the handoff stops at the backbone of my service, Roadrunner at brighthouse. Here is the stopping point for the trace. This seems to be a central hub which used to be handled by Level3 and is now inhouse.
