Flickr is mainstream now?
On my way back to the hotel from the Search Engine Strategies conference, waiting for the Red Line train, I noticed a billboard that I found interesting. Last I heard, flickr still had very low overall acceptance compared to the other photo sites like Yahoo! Photos and AOL Pictures.
The ad is for the Treo with the slogan, “Not just a cell phone, a Treo.” and shows flickr on the other screen. I looked around at the people waiting on the platform. Now (I am guessing) many of them know what a Treo is, or they know from the image, but how many of them really know flickr. I think the ad would have been better with an image in the device and the flickr logo over it.
If flickr has jumped outside of the comfy tech-geek only zone, no one told me. It was a cool sighting and a positive sign for a Web 2.0 to come out of the closet.

I think what Flickr makes mainstream is that it is by far not just used by geeks only. For example, del.ico.us would be a lot more geeky plattform.
From my experience, there are so many people on Flickr who really have nothing to do with computers – they are not even geeky, not very much into gadgets and have no idea what Web2.0 is about. Especially when you check the photostreams – you see so many passionate hobby photographers, many of them are not really techy, geeky people. They just enjoy taking pictures and like to share them.
And I mean, even my mom uses her Flickr account (with all the privacy options). Which is like my ultimate test for everything. Because usually all she does is email and Amazon when she gets online. ;) And getting around Amazon took her much longer, than uploading some pictures to Flickr.
So I guess they did some good things with Flickr.
