Know Where You Have Been and Show Your Friends
A friend of mine passed along a pretty groovy site earlier this week. It’s called FlightMemory and lets you create a map of where in the world you have been. It’s a great way of keeping track of just how many flights you have been on, which planes, which classes, which airlines, etc. Here is a sample FlightMemory map.
The program also calculates a few freaky stats including: Distance to the Sun, Distance to the Moon, Earth Circumnavigation and Flight Time. Now you can absolutely be sure how much time you have been in the air, of course it doesn’t include wait times, security lines, etc. And if you are so inclined, you can purchase a poster of your trips. And if that’s not enough, now you can figure out how many times you were stuck in a middle seat.
The team is based outside Frankfurt and has a partnership with an Internet consulting company in NYC. FlightMemory is available in English and German.
Yesterday, Colin Devroe posted a video asking his friends to share what cities they have been to. FlightMemory would work great for this.
What I’d like to see is a way to tie this into my other social networks. An auto Twitter/Facebook/MySpace message each time I add a new journey. A Facebook app so I can show the map in my profile. And a tie into Dopplr, Plazes, etc. They could also make it more interactive by allowing you to click on a city and view others who have flown there – creating a travel social network of sorts.
If you create a map, leave a comment with the link – would be neat to see where in the world the CN community has been to!

Hi Allen,
one of the guys in Frankfurt here ;) I kind am kind of late, but here is my answer.
Social Networks: End of last year we introduced the first Facebook app, letting FlightMemory-users show their banner on Facebook.
We do plan other, more convincing apps for Facebook users this year.
Here may be a map you like – it shows all flight from all users on both sites from the day before (German time / CET):

and for those who want to view Europe a bit closer:

Thank you for your nice words – we will try to respond faster the next time ;)
And we will surely do more great stuff this year!
Have fun!
