It just kills me to think that RSS subscribers mean nothing in this equation. Put some damn ads in the feeds and reward writers for winning new readers. The focus on nothing but pageviews is like saying newspapers saying "we only count news stand sales, home subscribers mean nothing for our circulation numbers."

Marshall: excellent point, but it's hard to tie an increase in subscribers to posts from a specific blogger. "We need a mechanism to reward hard work, and stardom -- to dispense pay increases automatically, if you will."

In any case, I quoted you in my post (with a link here of course).

"Will the Gawker bloggers now spend time pushing content onto social news sites like Digg and Mixx more than ever? Sure, why not."

...Because social media communities haven't already been whored enough.

Marshall makes an excellent point about how the growing use of RSS readers as a way to consume blog content is throwing the whole page view situation into disarray. For some areas such as technology, we could get to a point soon where page views will become less of an indicator because the audience will be so RSS-savvy - meaning they will use RSS readers rather than visiting a blog. The question is how Gawker or other publishers will take RSS into the bonus equation.

Looking beyond bonuses for blog writers, there's whole question of advertising in a CPM-based world - something I posted on recently:

As if there already wasn't enough sensationalistic and substance-light social media spam. I think the signal-to-noise ratio for social media just got audibly worse. Raw page views is terrible metric to base things on.
