This company must be doing something reeeaaally important. $124 Million, that's ridiculous. And after reading this article I still have no idea what the company does.

It’s impressive that they are able to make money off of display advertising, and internationally no less. How can sites like Facebook, with fast-growing international user-bases, can learn a better way to monetize from Glam?

BTW, are you going to be at the NYC ENT events later this month?

Ameeda, sites like Facebook, MySpace and other social networks don't have FOCUS of subject. They are like forums in many regards in that they have a large number of repeat visitors who do very little interaction with advertisements on the site. On the flip side, you have a highly focused magazine style site like the ones Glam produces which are very targetted and draw large numbers of both repeat and new visitors. Because the ads are also highly targetted they can charge MORE than Facebook & MySpace and display less ads and still make more money.

Chrispian,
I agree with you, and the difference is all too obvious. Having said that, though, social sites could learn a lot from sites like Glam. Social sites need to actively figure out how to create different streams of conversation and sharing that are more topical. I know that even on the site I work on, Snazl, we designed the system to be as topic-specific as possible. Granted we've only been operating in public for the last 4 months and only time will tell if our specific method works, but I think we've learned a lot from more focused sites like Glam.
