Gmail Down
We are receiving reports that Google’s mail service, Gmail, is down. Our tests from the CenterNetworks International Headquarters shows that it is unreachable. The time of our tests was 3:54pm Eastern Time. We will continue to update this post with additional announcements as they become available. Google’s Apps Status Dashboard shows an outage for Gmail although they state it’s for a “small subset of users”.
I use Yahoo Mail for the majority of my email although today I decided to send emails about apartments using my Gmail account. I guess I will be homeless if Google doesn’t get it working soon! :-P
Update: 5:00 PM Eastern – Google has provided an update on their blog about the service outage. They say that the team is working on the issue but there are no details on the cause or expected recovery time.

Hi – Now we are at January 10, 2010. Gmail has been down in our neck of the woods (Phoenix) since Friday. Can’t seem to find any reference to it on the usual sites, but a search on Twitter shows that I am not alone. And it seems to be random where it’s down. Any news on this outage? Nothing on the Google Dashboard. Should I start to take this personally? (It’s late, paranoia sets in – “Was it because I opted out of the settlement? OMG!)

Gmail is back up. If you’re still having problems, go to Google.com and sign out in the top right hand corner. Click on Gmail at the top, and log in again. Uncheck Keep Me Signed in. Should work :D

calling it a free service is really quite inaccurate. while true that no currency is charged for use; your use (along with everyone else) generates significant revenues for google. It is a mistake not to recognize that your info is worth real money and since users aren’t compensated it amounts to a fee-for-service model.

as of 1:35 pm California time it works from my ipod touch but the web interface is still down from here in San Diego.
FWIW I can both send and receive via gmail on the touch, so I’m not sure why the other report about not working from an iphone is about. Ahh OK they were using the gmail app whereas I’m using the apple mail app that comes with the ipod touch which I guess uses imap to talk to gmail.

Considering that access to Gmail is centralized to their servers and users, it’s not really a matter of location of the user (like having all your readers ring in based on their location) but a matter of what servers handling our mail are down in which of the many Google collocations.
So, running a list of “I’m down in XXX, YYY” doesn’t really do much good other than proving that this isn’t a centralized event.

I’m quite sure this applies only to that “subset of users” that are trying to access their email during the downtime. If they have 100 million accounts, but only 5 million people are trying to access it currently, then it’s only 5% which is a “small subset of users” regardless of geographic location. It’s the same logic the Gov’t uses.

Gmail down in Argentina
The Apps Status Dashboard says it was down way before I noticed, however I was using chat through Gmail at the time they mention. So most probably it was an issue for a small subset of user initially, now (two hours later) the issue escalated worldwide
Was able to get mail through iGoogle, however i got a friend in Austin, TX that can’t access iGoogle there.
