Howard Stern Explains Why Social Networking and Twitter are Stupid

facebookLast month Howard Stern (no relation) discussed social networks and blogs. While there are a lot of expletives, it’s very much worth listening to. It’s a view I’ve been hearing more and more as I travel. And it’s something that I’ve started to really wonder about as I watch what people "tweet"…is there really a future for this type of sharing. Note that Howard calls the networks MyFaceBook and MyFace.

Here’s a few of his comments:

  • it’s all a waste of time
  • if you are over 15, you shouldn’t be on these networks
  • people put everything on a blog like people give a fu**
  • go get a job

Unfortunately embedding is not available so click here to listen to Stern’s commentary.

Guys, honestly I totally agree with Stern.. After I read this I like him even more.. I personally hate these social network sites.. I think they are childish, totally waste of time and the bad news are that everybody joined one, especially ”MyFacebook”.. There are times that I think that the world is starting to go really mad.. Everybody is crazy or me and Stern.. I see professionals, young or old, having a profile on these sites and exposing themselves.. It’s ridiculous.. I don’t think it’s so ”cool” to see your 35 year old colleague shooting a photo of him by himself on the mirror and looking at another place like a model, or maybe not wearing a shirt or taking a picture on his motorbike and stuff like that..and applications like How sexy am I or Find out if you are a ninja or any ridiculous things that one might come up with.. And the funny part is that now, we that do not own a profile in sites like these, we are seen as losers and 10 years behind civilization.. If this is civilization then we lost the game.. I mean come guys.. It’s your life and you can do anything you want with it but what’s gone wrong? That’s my question.. Am I (and Stern) seeing it from a wrong perspective or something like that? I really don’t get it.

to each his own. time will tell. we’re all adults and make choices. who is anyone to really judge anyone else ?

  5. @zaggedEdge says:

Howard Stern is an idiot, do you know what kind of following this guy could have if he effectively used stuff like twitter and live blogging, etc. He’d have to figure it out and not violate any of his contracts, but come on get with it pal.

  6. Dave says:

Frantkly, Howard Stern is a waste of time. I am sure most have listen to him before at one point in time, and if you recall, (you probably don’t because it never really mattered) he just babbles on and on and on. It generally is very crude and gets old quickly. Who cares how people spend their time!

  10. There is a line in an old Steve Martin song that goes, “Criticize things you don’t know about…” that seems appropriate here.

Stern makes a living off of spouting opinions about topics about which he knows nothing, which begs the question of why anyone should give his opinions any merit? Just because he’s on the radio, famous, and/or rich? Sorry, no.

The one thing he does know is his own show. Thus, I would suggest Stern apply these bullet points to that.

And what makes social networks good for those under 15 and not for those over 15? If they’re useless, then wouldn’t they be useless for all? Just evidence of his ignorance and lack of deep thought, once again.

  11. Archie Mck says:

Absolutely, what an interesting dichotomy of thought he’s participating in here. Others opinions and experiences are invalid yet making his living expressing his own… is this just a defensive reaction based in ignorance and shrouded in shock talk?

  12. I think we are seeing our old superstars age – and not gracefully either. Howard Stern obviously has no clue behind mouthing off behind a microphone about topics that are totally over his head. Keep talking Howard, the 21st Century people quit listening years ago.

  13. AMYalcin says:

Hey Howard I hate to break it to you but you are on Facebook and it looks like you’ve got over 9,700 fans.

Companies, celebrities, etc. have got to start understanding this. You are already online now you need to start participating!

  14. Outsanity says:

People who make up fake profiles don’t really count…

  15. Kenya says:

I’d be willing to bet that pretty soon he’s going to try to create a presence on MyFaceBook and MyFace. “That’s stupid and useless” is always followed by “How can I get in on it?”

  16. How can you profess to be “The King of all Media” and not embrace new media?

  17. Anonymous says:

Excellent point. :-D I like this comment… if i could give it a point or a vote somehow I would! (Looks like “The Jester of Old Media” is more like it.)

  18. Allen,

Stern has really disappeared from the headlines and general conversation since he went into his “closed network” of Sirius. A friend of mine said, “He could be eviscerating people over there, we just wouldn’t hear about it.”

While there’s no denying the initial success that Stern had when he first jumped behind closed, paid doors, the growth of his show is nothing to proud of. Sirius in general is re-adjusting their subscriber growth numbers today – http://tinyurl.com/5qlv88 The company is blaming soft auto-sales but the real story is the lack of steady adoption.

Stern should be using the social network tools to expand his base but he can’t see anything outside of his walled-off world.

Sirius stock has plunged by 91% this year, yet Howard chooses to ignore the power of emerging networks. Good luck to you Howard, it’s ironic that I haven’t thought about you until I read a story about your show on a blog.

Put simply, “Dogs bark at what they don’t understand.”

  20. Zamats says:

and sorry An-ymous.. What exactly is with these sites that you think it’s so difficult for us low level low iq backward people to understand.(me and stern and every stern) It’s funny you know.. You think we bark at this because we are inept to follow your pace of evolution (you haven’t talk to me i know, but I bark too so I thought it would be nice to know what you actually mean with these words) – it will be easier for me to understand your ‘’species” and your way of thinking.

  21. Anonymous says:

First and last post, he is completely on point, particularly about twitter.

  22. MattS says:

I think it’s funny how you feel the need to quantify your statement as “First and last”… p.s. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and give you my condolences for McCains loss… neener neener.
