IAC Partners With Brightcove -- Vimeo Anyone? Vimeo?
IAC (Nasdaq:IACI) is announcing a partnership today with Brightcove to "giving IAC businesses the opportunity to launch comprehensive high quality Internet video initiatives". The first IAC brands to utilize the new partnership are: Ticketmaster, Citysearch and 23/6.
Now I get why they did this -- it's about distribution. IAC Chairman Barry Diller even notes at this with his comment on the deal, "By making this platform available across IAC we can continue to deepen engagement with our online audiences, expand the reach of our brands, and open powerful new revenue streams through online video advertising across our sites."
But where's IAC-owned Vimeo in all of this? While I know Vimeo is a community-based video sharing site, couldn't Barry have created a white-labeled version of the system and monetized it using the IAC advertising network? While I don't think this means Vimeo is doomed by any means, it sure is interesting that they selected to go outside before thinking about their own properties and how to leverage them for growth.

That is kind of odd... Although Brightcove is a more professionally-targeted service, why would they skip over vimeo? Think this is related to the incident with that one guy who quit vimeo in a big way?

I was thinking that too but left it out of the story so it wouldn't appear like gossip. not sure it's actally related but you never know.
Having the ability to serve as a whole content delivery network is a totally different ball game than being a platform for community video. Vimeo lacks the infrastructure to support that level of content delivery and backend. My company uses Brightcove and I don't think most people realize the amount of power the Brightcove API has on the backend. No other content delivery platform even comes close. It would take vimeo months of development and investment capitol to create what Brightcove has already developed and invested in.
Not sure on the exact figures, but my company pays between $25,000 - $60,000 A MONTH to have Brightcove as our content delivery platform.
In 2005, Diller invested in Brightcove
