Want more reasons for the iPhone's doom? A roundup of potential iFlop
Written by Allen Stern - January 12, 2007
As soon as the iPhone came out, I posted three reasons why I think it won't be a mega star. I still stand behind my reasons and it looks like more writers are posting their own reasons that this device might have more issues with being a superstar like the iPod currently is. While this might not be the iFlop and might go on to huge success, let's not forget the Newton.
Here are some other great posts from around the sphere. FYI, until the transition is complete, I am calling the network Cingular not AT&T.
- CNET - Thirteen reasons to doubt the hype
- ArsTechnica - Poorly designed apps can down the Cingular network
- Verizon - Raising text message fees. While not directly related, you better believe Cingular will follow suit.
- CenterNetworks - Cisco lawsuit
- CenterNetworks - Three reasons the iPhone won't be a superstar
- Consumerist - Bad guys might unlock the device
- Canoe - Ocean Telecom
- LA Times - In Japan, iPhone just a ripple
And just to be clear, I think the iPhone is very cool. I just believe there are some reasons (all of which can be overcome) that will hold the device back from being the next coming of the iPod for Apple.

You're a retard.

You're a retard."
.. no, it's just you, being brainwashed
That ArsTechnica link is actually exactly the opposite of what your text implies that it is. You say that it is about apps bringing down the cingular network, but except for the sarcastic title, it is exactly the reverse. It is in fact well summed up by this quote from near the end of the article
"There is absolutely no way that a single app on a single phone (or installed on thousands of phones) could accidentally destroy a network. "
It is really an interesting article, as what they are saying is that the excuse Jobs gave, exactly the one you list, is bunk. There is really no way for that to happen, Apple just wants control over it as much as possible. Classic example of using FUD as a logical fallicy.
A valid point, however, what your forgetting is the 18-27 crowd who carry ipods, palm pilots, cell phones and maybe even a blackberry. Or forget about the gadget geek crowd and just think of how many people you see on the street with an ipod and cell phone. Just on the three block walk between my house and the train this morning I counted ten. No one has come out with a device that has a decent keypad and is able to use cell or wifi until the iphone. I don't understand why it's even taken this long, but what I do know is that carrying around multiple gadgets is a pain. This seems to be the perfect solution.
um... the iphone has NOT come out
yes, you are a retard.
