The Business Development Manager will work directly with the Business Development Director and others within the group to identify, develop and close new licensing, distribution and syndication deals that leverage Wall Street Journal Digital Network (WSJDN) content. The Wall Street Journal Digital Network includes The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch & Barron’s digital properties. The BD Manager will help balance the needs of traffic and licensing, creating value by monetizing our premium content whether text or rich media.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Proactively source external content licensing relationships that offer financial and strategic value to WSJDN via distribution of hosted WSJD content to third-party services in exchange for licensing fees - fixed, variable or combo
• Support and expand current licensing and strategic distribution partnerships
• Take the lead as necessary on inbound content licensing deals in which WSJDN licenses content for use within our own network
• Develop domain expertise in relevant categories, including rich media such as video and audio, by researching potential partners, analyzing and developing potential business models, and determining optimal approach for DJ to participate
• Conduct detailed financial and strategic analysis to evaluate risks and balance against profit potential, size of the opportunity, and resource requirements
• Work with the Directors – and independently – during the negotiation of deal terms and drafting of agreements with legal
• Assist in the incubation and relationship management of resulting business relationships
Position Requirements: This position requires an analytical problem-solver with strong relationship-building and -management skills as well as a strategic understanding of media business development in an age of digital transformation. 3+ years of media business development, content / intellectual-property licensing or online ad sales, experience with a proven track record of high performance and monetization preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills essential. College degree required; MBA preferred. Some travel required.
