Juicy Campus Lets Students Spread Gossip About Each Other

Allex - February 18th, 2008

Juicy CampusJuicy Campus is a site (social network?) receiving a large amount of press this month. The idea is simple: each campus around the U.S. has a page and you can post whatever you like on it anonymously about students at that campus. Apparently some of the postings have been quite bad. The woman in the video below describes Juicy Campus as, “a place for students to talk sh** about each other”.

The service has been down lately (was down for me earlier, up now barely, down again) which apparently pushed it into Google Hot Trends as people were looking for information on why it was down.

Matt Ivester founded Juicy Campus as a way to share gossip on campuses. He basically says that Juicy Campus isn’t liable for what’s posted, the author would be if anyone is. comScore has no data on the site as of yet and their Alexa ranking is 125k but my guess is that internal student networks won’t contribute to Alexa’s ranking mechanism.

From The Prince George Citizen, ‘Duke’s vice-president for student affairs, Larry Moneta, said the school asked Ivester to consider “moderating the venom or at least moderating the opportunity for venom.” However, “my sense is that’s not that person’s interest,” Moneta said.’

While the site blocks search engines including Google from indexing the content, the real question is whether the content could hurt someone in the future from a job, a relationship, etc.

What do you think? Should sites like Juicy Campus be allowed?

Here is a video from a person who has been using the site since it launched:

Kids in this generation spend all their time wallowing in narcissistic fora like myspace, facebook, and youtube; it’s only poetic justice that now the internet is biting them on the ass. Screw them and their insufferable moralizing. They deserve all the horrid crap they’ve created for themselves.

Free speech, no if’s an’s or buts? (“an’s”?) This is a syllogism in its own right. Has our nation forgotten the context of this amendment? It was to protect people from tyranny of governments who could not take criticism by citizens. If those who wrote it could only read the smut that we’ve published, said, pushed in the name of “free speech!”

The real battle should not be fought for the sake of protecting irresponsible slander about others, but the way that those who say things against the government are subsequently perceived as a threat and the way that our government lords it over its citizens in a guise of protection known as the Patriot Act. So, while our nation fights over the absolutely preposterous “rights” for malign speech, we do not realize that there are more pressing issues that will affect our futures much more than whether or Susie over at Penn was good in bed.

Either you believe in FREE SPEECH or you do not. There are no exceptions, if, an’s or but’s.

    FIRST AMENDMENT:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

New Jersey Kangaroo courts will be put out of business if it goes to the Supreme Court.

Let’s all hope & pray the New Jersey District Attorney is investigated for trying to undermine the U.S. Constitutional Rights of Americans while New Jersey’s crime rate skyrockets with illegal aliens murdering Americans.
    Maybe he’s another Spitzer!

Geez, as if the kids don’t have enough to worry about already with facebook/myspace rants, kids shooting other kids, and suicide cults. Can’t they just go to learn? and be kids? this is like dragging highschool into college.

  13. Elizabeth says:

I thought when a person started into college they were leaving “childhood” behind. Seeing posts where it’s “cool” to spread gossip (truth or lies) causing me to realize that many are refusing to just GROW UP. What’s fun about hurting others? If that’s what’s considered “fun” then college is a huge waste of time and money for many of these posters.

P.S. Regardless of what the site “claims” there is no such thing as anonymity on the internet. Consider this today’s lesson.

This is just a smaller projection of larger problems in today’s society. Everyone gossips, everyone spreads rumors. It is the only way that some people can retain any sort of self-esteem; is to make others look more ridiculous that what happened to them the previous weekend.
Ever heard the expression, “if you want to feel better about yourself just go to Walmart?”…If you ever want to gain some self-esteem, jump on the juicy bus and make yourself feel better by degrading others.

  24. CouchTalk.Net says:

Kids DO have problems, and the teenage and early 20′s years have enough high emotion as it is. CouchTalk.Net is a site that tries to help these problems. It is partly a response to campus tensions.

  25. Alex Klein says:

Matt Ivester went to Duke and so, naturally, Duke is JuicyCampus’s biggest market. I have JuicyCampus magnets, bottle openers, condoms (seriously) and a t-shirt. They sent Duke kids tons of free stuff.

This website became people’s obsession. It also became people’s downfall. It was embarrassing, funny, disgusting, horrifying, and interestingly, not illegal.

While I don’t read it often anymore, I have been following its progress. It does seem like it is protected by free speech laws. However, I recently bet a friend that JuicyCampus would go out of business simply because they could not pay for all the lawsuits that would rise concurrently with the rise in popularity.
