What you point out is evidence of a simple reality that devotees of online networking often don't emphasize enough: your professional networking strategy needs to include both personal and electronic components.

Just as it doesn't make sense anymore to manage professional networks with only meetings, phone calls, and voicemail, neither does it make sense to rely only on online networking especially when you need to deal with "non-technology" and high-status people.

You have to be aware of the "boundaries" and "edges" you will need to traverse among the various communities you belong to.

The only real utility I've gotten from LinkedIn is the questions and answers section. Of course I'm a student and don't have much of a network yet. The job listings are a little...sparse in some cases.

Good job with the post. You've said pretty much what I've been thinking about social networks for the past month.

Nice article! I agree very much with "...well-known, being on LinkedIn may not be a very attractive proposition for you or your inbox....".

LinkedIn is really a amazing service. Really nice niche of "connecting people to each other based on who they 'KNOW' already". Its very valuable as a service to stay in touch with existing and past connections and even to try to get introduced to your connection's connections. But ever think of "what benefit does your connection have to introduce you to their connection?" Sure if they are a good friend of yours, they don't mind. But why would they want to introduce you and get nothing out of it. In the real world, it works very differently.
