Socializer Now Localist; Just Another Local Events Site?
Event listing service Socializer has gone through a name change blender and coming out they are now Localist. My guess is that the name change comes from having a name close to Socializr (no E). Socializr has received a decent bit of press and funding and it probably makes sense to distance Socializer from Socializr. No word was provided if this came at the request of Socializr.
The site seems similar to NY-based GoLark. Localist says they list "all" of the events in the cities they cover – could it really be all? I’d be careful to make "all" claims on a startup. If they do, that’s awesome. Just like GoLark, you can vote up events you like and push them to the most popular events page. The current week’s calendar is a nice feature – it’s always available as you browse the site. You can also interact with local businesses where the events are held and the performers as well.
For Localist to be successful in Baltimore and Washington, they need to own two groups of people. City locals who are looking for events and traveling visitors. Both groups will be hard to win over but if they can succeed, then they can look at expanding to other cities where the travelers are located. That’s how they can spread word-of-mouth outside of Washington and Baltimore.
