I thought he had enough VC to keep Mahalo going for YEARS. Why suddenly break Web 2.0 tradition and sully the conversation with talk of PROFIT? Did Mahalo employees suddenly get lives? Are they not running fast enough to the food pellet at the end of the maze???

Really how different is search compared to research? In most cases I would say they are one in the same. However you find us, whether is from a SE or direct if we have your topic you will find the best resource available for this information.

@derek That best computer speaker has been worked on, tons of original content and help added:

http://www.mahalo.com/Best_Computer_Speakers

This is a great example of how we can mix helpful content (text) with links so a user can draw their own conclusion.

Good to see someone in the tech sphere mentioning Wall's spam comment. Mahalo is a total SEO play, and a very smart one at that. It has nothing to do with new technology or features, it's a monetized Wikipedia, based around the top queries.

Calacanis is a great marketer, and you can see them continue to pump out the linkbait. Unless Google decides to shut them down, this will be a lucrative business.

that users want content + links. So, i really like the delicious + 400 words/fast facts + spam free = Mahalo description. Of course, Delicious doesn't really order or group the links... so that's the curation part that makes the analogy break down a little. The links of Delicious are great in many cases, but the top 7 are not the top 7 in order of importance to someone doing a search.

The anonymous comment at 1:57pm is exactly correct: there are MANY folks who will contribute because they are site owners. While the bad site owners won't get much traffic since they are at the bottom of the page, the good ones will get added up top and get really good traffic.

You are 100% correct that we've evolved the model. We thought 10% content and 90% links, now we think 50-60% content, 20-30% links (20-30% user contributions: reviews, images, videos, links, etc).

Of course this is the 50th time you've pointed out that we've evolved the model... is this some kind of news flash? I've said it on stage for a couple of months now.

In order for Mahalo to be profitable about .5 to 1% of folks coming would have to leave to be profitable (at current growth rate). Profitability should not be a problem for us, we'll get there in a year or so... right according to plan.

What he is doing is creating a yahoo, think about it when yahoo started was just a link directory, this is the same a link directory with content. Mahalo might just come out on top considering the state of search at the moment. Sites like this could have the edge on wikipedia if the facts are rock solid.

Honestly, + free spam would be a bit more accurate.
