It just seems nobody has truly sat down and reasoned out how they can be made compelling in the US (I realize Asia is a different story). Any performance advantage will soon be gone and there is an obvious increase in printing costs with color. A friend's startup is trying to do this with a hybrid approach using RFID/NFC and SMS/UniqueID alongside a dedicated app. I’m a big fan of QR codes as well,Stern.
