MindTouch Hits 100k Wiki Installations

Allen Stern - September 26th, 2007

MindTouchMindTouch has announced this morning that they have reached the 100,000 installations of their Wiki software, Deki Wiki. Check out a full review on ReadWriteWeb. I have copied the entire press release below as I can’t find it on the MindTouch Web site.

<begin rant>There have been many releases over the past week with numbers in them: installations, registrations, users, etc. Not a one talks about current usage. As an analytics nut, this really frustrates me. In this example, MindTouch has noted installations, but how do they track an installation? Does the install procedure send something back to the MT servers? Otherwise I would assume the number is actually SourceForge downloads. Just once, it would be great to see a company talk about actual current usage. </end rant>

I have spoken with a few people who have tried Deki Wiki and each of them has given the tool a glowing review. It seems to be more user-friendly than MediaWiki and is a downloadable application versus the service-models from Squarespace, pbWiki and Wetpaint.

MindTouch Reaches Over 100,000 Wikis for Intranets, Enterprises and Communities

Thriving global user community and rapid innovation drive adoption

San Diego, CA – September 26, 2007 – MindTouch, the wiki platform company, today announced it has reached over 100,000 wiki installations since releasing Deki Wiki a year ago. Deki Wiki, an open source wiki and application platform, is now being installed over 500 times per day, making it the fastest-growing wiki software on the market.

MindTouch is seeing adoption accelerating by 50% each month and trending upward. Since launching in July 2006, Deki Wiki has added four languages (German, French, Portuguese, and Russian), over 100 new features, and received numerous awards and recognitions from reviewers and adopters alike, including endorsements from both Microsoft and Novell.

MindTouch credits its success to the quality of its platform and its thriving user community <http://www.opengarden.org>  from around the world that keeps driving innovation. Deki Wiki is free for download and use without restrictions. It integrates with numerous online services, including Google Analytics, ThinkFree Office, Windows Live Controls, and the Windows Desktop for easy wiki management.  MindTouch backs Deki Wiki with professional support contracts for businesses, enterprise and communities.

“Our ability to grow a global community so quickly is largely attributable to our product. Early adopters are the best judges of innovation, and they have emphatically voted for MindTouch with their downloads,” said Aaron Fulkerson, co-founder and VP of Products at MindTouch.

MindTouch Deki Wiki is innovating on many levels:

    * Its page scripting support enables users to create content mashups with data from various applications as if they were part of the wiki.
    * Its web-oriented architecture enables new features to be added as web-services in a programming language and operating system agnostic manner.
    * Its comprehensive REST API enables integration with other applications using XML, JSON or PHP.
    * Its packaging as a VMware certified virtual appliance or as source code provides the quickest and most flexible deployment options available.

Thousands of organizations have already deployed Deki Wiki and are reaping the benefits. Flexible and easy to use, Deki Wiki features a polished WYSIWYG editing experience and is an ideal choice for intranets, extranets, and interactive web sites. 2. Allen, thank you for the post and your kind words. Allow me to shed some light on how we estimated the install-base.

    * There have been just over 50,000 installations of hosted Deki Wikis on our site and two others that are hosted by partners.

    * Downloads at Sourceforge are around 55,000 now (see http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=173074&ugn=dekiwiki&type=prdownload ) with about 600-700 downloads each day. We only began tracking all our downloads at Sourceforge as of June. Prior to that we conservatively estimate we had 10,000 downloads.

    * Not included in this estimate are SVN code repo check outs and several other sites like Download.com that have long offered downloads of Deki Wiki.

Finally, we made installing Deki Wiki super easy as a VMware appliance. So, installation takes just 5 minutes (not counting download time). ;-) Check it out: http://mindtouch.com/Deki_Wiki

I have spoken personally with a lot of our users and I’m confident we’ve achieved 100k installs or I wouldn’t feel comfortable making this claim.

Again, thanks for the post. I hope you install Deki Wiki yourself.
