Mobile Software Engineer

The New York Times Company is looking for a Software Engineer with Mobile and User Interface Experience to join its Mobile Services group.
The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled software engineer and have hands-on experience developing web user interfaces, software for web and mobile platforms, and experience with database driven services.
This position calls for a self-starter who is also capable of communicating with technical and non-technical individuals and groups.
The ideal candidate possesses the ability to develop new and innovative web service applications with the experience to define the database structures and XML definitions to be utilized by applications and web services. Additionally the candidate must have experience in the creation of user interfaces using PHP, CSS, AJAX and xHTML for web browsers and mobile devices.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain company-wide mobile technology platforms, including Device Management, SMS, MMS, Location, 2D Bar Coding and other developing content delivery technologies.
- Design and develop with PHP, and AJAX for wired web and xHTML for Mobile browser user interfaces with CSS presentation connecting to MySQL Databases for data repository, reporting and configuration.
- Create and maintain a Mobile Device capability web service for use within the NYTimes company services.
- Integrate mobile platforms with New York Times Company applications and services.
- Stay abreast of the evolving marketplace for mobile media including the emergence of new standards, protocols, devices, applications and services.
Qualifications
- BS in Computer Science
- 5 years of experience with Java and PHP development with direct experience creating web service applications.
- Strong working usage MySQL SQL semantics, MySQL database views, database data structures, schema design and application development accessing database structures.
- Experience with web applications and portals using PHP with HTML, xHTML, AJAX and CSS presentation layers.
- Working knowledge of XML and XML based protocols
- SMS, mobile messaging and Mobile device knowledge is a plus
- Experience with L/SAMP technologies (Linux/Solaris, Apache, PHP, MySQL)
- Experience with Apache Tomcat is a plus
- Interest in mobile applications and technologies
- Demonstrated ability to develop prototype applications to full deployment and operations handover.
- Experience with gathering requirements from customers, requirements analysis, testing, and documentation
- Motivated self-starter
- Strong communication, problem solving and organizational skills
