Mockup: What if Google sold video ads?
Written by Allen Stern - January 24, 2007
Yesterday I received an email from Google that I have been selected to be part of a pilot group who will test new video advertising from Google within the AdSense program of which I am a part. Since we know that video advertising is going to blow up this year to near $1 billion, Google will naturally want to own the space, similar to their ownership of text advertising.
I am showing two styles of video ads:
- A "traditional" video ad at 200pixels along the right menu.
- A widescreen ad in the middle which would be autostart.
Click the image to view the larger size image. And please note, my design skills are limited.

Wow, lets hope not. Time to switch to another search engine.
Why would you not want that over text???
Well, I think that the colors in that top ad are particularly warm and inviting. Imagine play buttons more designed and I don't think I'd mind that layout too much. Uglier ads and autoplay though and it's a bomb. (Nice link from Gizmodo btw!)
Hey Marshall - thanks for the link comments - you don't like my ugly play button? :)
I don't think that Video ads will be shown on GOOGLE.
As we all know they have haven't started showing image ads yet. right?
Or I am missing something?
I would be surprised if Google started showing video ads in their main search engine results pages. I suspect they'll start appearing in Google Video, YouTube and any AdSense advertisers that want them. I also expect Google to make deals with video content owners (TV, Movie, etc.) to allow them to start monetizing copyrighted content.
