My.Netscape launches… Allen don’t get it (and he really, really tried!) Video review included

mynetscapeAlrighty… so yet another *&%T#*()%) start page, My.Netscape, launched today. And it ain't there. It so ain't there. First, it looks like a Vignette install… appears to have no more features than any 1998 start page. I could not find any way to add my own content, all of the other players have this ability. There is an error when you click signup when you are logged in (see video) which is plausible since they are in beta (beta protects you like a superman cape!).

Mr. Arrington says, "Netscape’s user base is not exactly cutting edge, and AOL is clearly taking good ideas from new startups and seeing if their users will consume them."

Mr. McManus notes, "Can Netscape's user base handle yet another web 2.0 overhaul?!" — here is the issue Richard… this ain't Web 2.0! This is Web .01 beta!

You have yourminis and Schmedley, two of the best in the new start page space. You have frontrunners Pageflakes and Netvibes. Why not partner with one of these instead of this. Oh yea, and where is the weather module?

Anyway, here is my 5 minute review - enjoy (warning: there is a swear word in the video):

Whatever happened to the powerful company that would change the world, the browser market, etc. Oh yea, the Calacanis-Digg clone, that will save us! Oh wait, that didn't work… so let's make a start page. Anyone else think that by showing all of their own aol content, it's a good way to boost subs numbers for their rss?
