MyContags Review
MyContags provided the following overview about their service:
MyContags allows users to: track IT conferences and events, view photos and play videos of the event, read event reviews from bloggers who attended the conference, listen to podcasts of major IT conferences and key personalities of the IT industry, read the blogs of speakers at the various conferences, network with people who are attending the same event, promote conferences and events.
First Impressions
Mycontags allows you to find IT conferences and events and find materials associated to the events.
Signup
Basic signup, all fields are required though not noted anywhere. If all I want to do is comment on an event, why do I need to enter my company information?
Service Usability
MyContags allows you to track and find conferences and events related to the Information Technology space. There are some very cool features like the timeline map that you can move around within to find conferences in the date range you would like. I immediately checked to see if PubCon was listed. It was not. I did find two other conferences that I know of. So 67% for a quick search. I think for MyContags to gain a following, they will have to scour the Web for every single IT conference and event worldwide. It will be a tough task, but is a required one for success.
The site also features aggregated content from the blogs of the speakers. Another good feature is being able to add the dates of a selected conference or event to Google Calendar. Perhaps they should add hCalendar Microformat which would allow a user to add the event to any calendar. Not everyone is using Google Calendar yet.
You can tag an event for easy searching later on. I think they did a good job with the depth of information about each event. Of course someone has to add the content, but there are pictures from Flickr, videos from YouTube, podcasts, blogs, etc.
What would I like to see added to MyContags
- More events and conferences - especially non-USA events
- hCalendar and vCards for the presenters and conference/event schedules
Final comments
Mycontags has a lot of promise with their use of technology. It appears to be just the right amount. They will need to have a very thorough calendar of world-wide events to make it the one-stop IT conferences and events site.
hReview Microformat Details
MyContags is a social bookmarking website focused on IT conferences and events.

Hi Allen,
Thanks so much for reviewing mycontags.com. We are already working on providing an export to hCalendar format. That feature should be up soon.
The site is only a little more than a month old. We are hopeful that we will gain traction very soon and you will see a lot more events being posted on mycontags.com. Having said that, we will be happy to have fewer quality events which interest a larger group of users rather than having a gaggle of obscure events cluttering the site. The other need that the site hopes to fulfil is to become a one stop site for all content related to a particular event by mashing up Flickr photos, YouTube videos and Technorati blogs for that event.
By registering you can do more than just add comments. It allows you to tag and maintain a favorite list of events, friends and speakers as well as add the relevant Flickr, YouTube or Technorati tags to the event. Your comments about the registration page is well taken. We will rework it to indicate the optional and required fields in a better fashion.
Thanks once again for reviewing the site. We will update you as soon as we have more features (including the ones mentioned above) on the site.
