Is Google Getting Into The Affiliate Game?
Written by Allen Stern - March 4, 2008
Search Engine Land and Google Operating System are reporting the new testing by Google of site search boxes inside of search results. I've embedded the example of the Amazon search box post. As a marketer, I've got several questions and concerns with these search boxes.
- Is Google getting into the affiliate game? Seems like it would be easy for Google to slap an affiliate code on that search box for Amazon and generate another stream of revenue from users seeking products on Amazon?
- The more that Google keeps a user on Google, the more likely is that a user will click an ad and be sent away from my site.
- The more that Google keeps a user on Google, the less impressions I can serve to that user.
The feature has some potential but as a marketer, there are some important reach tactics to consider before signing off. I have to believe that Google has received permission to offer these search boxes which appear now for Amazon, Wikipedia, YouTube, etc. Will this be a selection inside Google Webmaster Tools like the sitelinks feature is? If so, I am all for it.

I think its great, since many users type the domain into the search box (instead of the address bar) Google can now save them a click. So for the extra click they accrued going this route they just got it back. :)
