NY Tech Meetup Recap Part IV – Styky and NewsGroper w/video
Part IV from the NY Tech Meetup Recap includes Styky and NewsGroper. Check out the other NY Tech Meetup recap posts as well.
Styky
Styky is attempting to create the next generation of your mobile phone. Basically it’s a replacement for the typical address book on your mobile. There is a social network behind the app which helps you find others that your friends are connected to.
Their belief is that using Styky will save you time and effort should you lose your phone. The app is between 200-600k and works on all of the "smart" handsets.
Styky’s revenue model is based on local couponing. You can select a coupon and then show your mobile to the merchant and the coupon will be honored. What I don’t know is whether the coupons are pushed to you or only if you ask for one.
They also have a Facebook app, lost phonebook, which allows you to share your phone info with your friends.
NewsGroper
NewsGroper is a parody news site that creates fake blogs for celebrities and politicians. They have about 100 fake blogs currently and they pair one writer with each blog so the writer can become an "actor" to that fake person.
The vision is to create a distributed workflow of writers and parody every real person. Personally I think this "fake xyz" was cute once or twice but after that it’s a fad that will quickly die off.
