NY Tech Jobs Counter: 301,500
AeA has released their NY state technology data report today. The data is from both 2007 and (mostly) 2006 so take it with a grain of salt. New York State remained the third largest cyberstate employing 301,500 with a total payroll of $24.4 billion. New York’s high-tech industryexperienced a net gain of 1,600 jobs in 2006.
The report also states that venture capital investments in New York totaled $1.2 billion in 2007, ranking the state 5th nationwide by this metric. Ok, so I get that California is probably 1st but who is second, third and forth? I assumed NY was 2nd, maybe the count includes all VC not just technology.
In a bit of trivia, New York ranks first for employment in the photonics industry with a total payroll of 8,500. We beat California by 1,100!
Other facts from the reporting regarding NY technology:
- 301,500 high-tech workers in 2006 (3rd ranked cyberstate)
- 1,600 jobs gained between 2005 and 2006
- High-tech firms employed 43 of every 1,000 private sector workers in 2006, ranked 26th nationwide
- High-tech workers earned an average wage of $80,900 (10th ranked), or 42 percent more than New York’s average private sector wage
- A high-tech payroll of $24.4 billion in 2006, ranked 3rd nationwide
- 17,700 high-tech establishments in 2006, ranked 4th nationwide
- Venture capital investments of $1.2 billion in 2007, down nine percent from $1.3 billion in 2006, ranked 5th nationwide
- R&D expenditures of $13.1 billion in 2004, ranked 6th nationwide

I’d love to see the breakout by area. Paychex, etc. to the contrary, it’s like the 21st century is passing this city by. Local media doesn’t even cover the start-ups here. In general, I find out about any completely by accident.
Good to see that NY is still the state of opportunity!
