Reminder: NYC Sales Tax Increases August 1st to 8.875%

A quick reminder to CN readers in the five boroughs of NYC (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island), your sales tax will increase on August 1, 2009 to 8.875%. This new and exciting “upgrade” is an increase of .5% over the current 8.375% rate. Document N-09-12 has a full breakdown on the tax changes. Clothing and footwear up to $110 remain exempt of sales tax.
One can only assume that purchases on Amazon and other electronic retailers that charge NYC residents sales tax will also get upgraded tomorrow.
So if you have any big purchases to make (e.g. new tv, computer, etc.) it might be worth checking if clicking the purchase button today will save you a few dollars.
