NYSIA February Meeting Recap – Discussion With Howard Greenstein and Henry Blodget
Allex - February 11th, 2008
Tonight was the February Meeting of the NYSIA (New York Software Industry Association). The discussion was with Howard Greenstein and Henry Blodget. I’ve posted the videos below that I captured. They videos should follow the conversation along relatively well. Here are some of Henry’s comments:
- Regarding the Yahoo-Microsoft deal, he noted that the market can’t support 4 major players (AOL, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft)
- Microsoft is running a distant 3rd with pathetic performance
- Google makes more money off their search business than all others
- NY is the media capital of the world
- Differences to Silicon Valley:
- Valley kids grew up seeing huge successes, whereas NYC has only had a few mega deals
- Why would kids out of college want to work at a startup when they can earn big bucks on Wall Street and in media
- Startups who fail get punished more in NYC than in SV
- Believes NYC will be a strong tech community soon
- When asked about startups here, he mentioned two: etsy and Gawker and believes Gawker will be acquired
