Ping.fm Gets Some Cash to Help You Market Your Company
If Joi Ito wasn’t busy enough after signing on as Tucows Director (plus his other jobs), he is now an investor at Ping.fm. ReadWriteWeb is reporting that Ito and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman have joined Ping.fm as angel investors.
The idea behind Ping.fm is to take your messages and spread them around the Web to the various social networks and aggregator services. From my perspective Ping.fm is a marketing tool, the average Internet citizen most likely would never use a service like this. But for companies and early-adopters, it could work very well. These groups need to "yell" to everyone and Ping.fm makes that easy.
From my perspective it’s always odd when I see people reply to a "topic" on FriendFeed that was auto-posted by someone who doesn’t use FriendFeed. The replies always seem to try to talk to the originator but of course that person will never see nor reply to those messages. Ping.fm will only exacerbate this situation.
Again, as a marketing tool it’s a very smart play – similar in nature to pingomatic for Web posts.
