Update Regarding Any CN Emails Received Today
by Allen Stern on November 23rd, 2007
Just a quick update – you might have received one (or more) emails from CN today. Last night I added a new comment option which allows you to be notified when someone replies to your comment. It appeared to be working smoothly – that is until the next spam comments came in. From what I can tell, two issues are going on with the module:
- When a spam comment comes in, the module sends out an email without realizing that it’s a spam. So if you clicked the link to see the new comment, you saw nothing because the spam doesn’t show.
- There is a setting to decide whether the setting is on or off. It appears that it put everyone who already commented on a post into the "on" by default.
In any case, I have removed the comment option for now and sincerely apologize for any additional emails you might have received today. If you have any other comments or concerns, please let me know.
Thanks to Chris Messina for sending in a note about the issue.

I’m not the be all and end all of developers but I would guess it’s an .htaccess issue. They request was /comment_notify/disable/ with a key at the end, and it gave a 404. So likely it’s just something small that .htaccess isn’t catching the pattern maybe.
Anyway, good luck, it’s obviously not the biggest deal.
Don’t sweat it at all, but good you had a post on it, I was a little confused. But one thing I noticed, there is a link to disable further notifications– it didn’t seem to load properly. So you might look at that as well.
Otherwise, what’s life without a stack of errant emails now and again? Have a good weekend.
Thanks Morgan for the feedback – looks like I might need to get some custom development done.
