Review of GameGum - online flash video game community
Yesterday I discussed the "embed" and what might happen to it this year as more sites are created just from using embeds of other sites. Today I received an email from Nate Wienert who is the founder and developer on a new flash video game site called GameGum. The site is similar to a couple of other sites we have reviewed: Kongregate and CasualGems.
I asked Nate for his overview of the site, "At GameGum we keep a genuine focus on both game players and developers. Three releases on average are made live a month adding features or fixing bugs our users tell us about, and developers receive from 25-50% revenue share on their games." He also noted their new contest.
What's great about these sites is that they take games from developers and design houses and put a community on top. So you can discuss sites across multiple houses and rate and comment. GameGum can help the Flash developer get some added visibility by expanding the reach of the developer's games and also solicit real-time feedback. There are about 20 categories of games with hundreds of total games. I must resist playing because I won't get any work done today!
Years ago addictinggames.com was the most popular of these game listing services. But they had no community if I remember back in the early part of this decade. It was search and play on the publisher's site.
What might be nice for GameGum is to offer an option to play the game on the publisher's web site. This way they return some of the traffic back to the publisher as well. Nate notes that they offer publishers a split on revenue which is awesome. I still would return some users to the publisher's Web site.
