Some Thoughts on Google AdSense Ads in FeedBurner Feeds (video)

Allen - May 30th, 2008

FeedBurnerEarlier today we reported on the Google announcement that Google AdSense ads will soon be available in FeedBurner feeds. Overall I think this is a good step forward to get us all discussing RSS monetization. I still believe that paying a small amount for a full feed with no ads will be the most popular way by the end of the year. If a person isn’t interested in paying, then they get a partial feed with ads that drives back to the site. With the speed of mobile devices and broadband connections, there’s no reason to not want to visit the content creator’s site.

I am very interested in feedback on the above and your ideas on how RSS will be monetized. This overall discussion could become one of the hot topics later this year.

Here are some of my thoughts on this announcement via video:

Hello Allen, Hope you catch a big fish :)

Seriously, I love this blog. I just see something missing… You just delivered very good vlogging stream. Don’t you think it’s better to provide a text version of your vlog (together with the video)?

    1) Content get’s indexed by Search Engines
    2) Bloggers (like me) can “Quote” your content

Anyways, those are just suggestions. I totally agree with you on the RSS feed monetization.

    Let us know.

Thanks AJ – I appreciate your feedback and hope you always find value (or humor) in my videos. I agree on the text part – it’s something I’ve thought about the last few days – for example, on the Twitter song video I posted the entire lyrics. On this video, I just posted a short summary. Perhaps I will look at using MTurk like I did for the audio podcasts last year. But you are correct, on both #1 and #2.

RSS feed monetization will be a fun and exciting topic to discuss!

Steven – don’t focus on the technology – focus on the solution/problem – then we can work on creating a technology answer – if you only focus on what’s available today, nothing will ever move forward.

This seems like an interesting idea Allen. Im not too sure if the concept of paying for feeds would work. It is trying to solve the issue of monetizing feeds, but it could potentially make a lot more issues. How will you be able to control the spread of feeds into other blogs and other sites? It is then getting into the same issues as the music industry is currently having to deal with. Free is the only way.

I guess these ads will be CPM based (like the regular FAN ads) – so the revenue should ideally be proportional to the number of subscribers.

  6. centernetworks says:

hmm- that would be nice but why do you believe these will be cpm based? I believe they will be typical AdSense ads – that is, you must click to get paid.

Anyone ever tell you that you look like Jeff Garlin? Sorry been watching Curb S6 on dvd lately ;)

I can’t really see paying for feeds. If feeds can’t be monetized directly through advertising I would certainly be happy with only seeing the first paragraph or two from a post and then clicking through to the site for the full story. For me feeds are all about the convenience of being able to track tons of content and quickly be able to pick out the stories I’m interested in.

Granted I’m not using a mobile device so that is certainly a separate issue.

First time at this site; it’s pretty cool.
I agree with Josh in that I don’t think paying for feeds would work. I certainly wouldn’t pay, even though feeds are convenient. I, too, use feeds to quickly scan for content, and I have no problem clicking through to the site. Besides, 9 out of 10 times that I click through, I usually find some additional content of interest.
As with everything on the Wide World of Webbing, I think the keyword is “FREE”. Put a price on it, and it may lose popularity very quickly. I vote for feed monetization.
