Drama love your writing, if you could only keep it under 5000 words sometimes, I can't be bothered to read this much ranting.

Sean: thanks for the kind words. I am, however, the Anti-Twitter. I'm trying to prove that from time to time it takes more than 140 characters to express a cogent idea or argument.

If I can get just one Twitter user to read this entire post, I figure I'll have offset all of last week's sins.

New reader. Like the counter points. Love seeing two side to all things.

What about this; the reason hardware or extremely complex innovations have fallen out with VCs is because these start ups are like trains. Hard to start. Hard to stop and hard to change directions when the "passengers" want to go somewhere else. VC don't want to ride trains. They want to ride in cars powered by the sun... that can change direction quickly. If web 2.0 start ups were more like trains, then VC's would not ride in them. Now lets close our eyes and meditate on this.

I would read a blog that was devoted to truly innovative start-ups and/or practical tips for identifying and delivering innovative products and services. Can you recommend some? It's a serious question. If you want to earn above average products you have to move beyond the herd: who do you read (or where do you go) to help you identify innovative startups?

I think I've sent 6 tweets in 15 months (no clue really) and haven't logged into FB in over 6 months, but you sound like a broken record. Of the 20th century's greatest innovations according to Forbes, 2 are comprised of 0s and 1s (POS data and WWW), the rest are now commodities and their production occurs in China. While I can't argue with most of what you written, there is value in compiling data and mining it for significance. These 'valley darlings' are in a perfect position to innovate in data mining technology.

I think y-combo has had a measurable and significant ROI, but I don't have the facts to back that up; I just know of numerous acquisitions and the measly sums invested. Just think of these projects as resume builders for young web developers. I agree that these young folk should skip the pittance they get from the incubators, hook-up with some bizdev guys, and grow a real business, but they're just kids.

BTW, I like how you see things in black and white: either 140 characters or 5000 words. Is there no middle ground? I sure hope you are "with us" and not "against us."
