Summary
Zipcar is looking for an experienced software engineer with a background in computer science and engineering, including strong experience in development of web-based applications, database stored procedures, and Linux environments. This position will report into the Zipcar engineering team, and will work closely with other teams within Zipcar to ensure we continue to provide a superior service and user experience for our members.

We are looking for a tenacious and creative problem solver with the ability to dive in and understand complex problems then craft solid, scalable engineering solutions. Our team is responsible for producing these solutions for both our members and other teams within Zipcar.

Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
– You will be responsible for design, development, documentation, and optimization of our web-based systems. You’ll need a strong background in user interface design, web application development, database programming, and community websites for customer-facing as well as internal applications. You will strive to produce effective and elegant solutions that will scale up as Zipcar continues to grow.
– You will work with fellow engineers to define and enhance both the framework and application architecture, and to define and enhance development processes, especially those that contribute to high quality, short-cycle releases and concurrent development. You will take initiative in reviewing, recommending and implementing the best engineering practices – translating requirements into functional specifications, developing schedules, and communicating with other developers and organizations within the company.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have the following experience, skills, and education:
– BS degree in Computer Science / Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience
– Ideally 3 to 5 years experience in web-based software development, including intern experience
– Significant experience with web software development including: database schema design, user interface design, web application development, Oracle SQL and PL/SQL, (X)HTML/CSS, third-party integrations, AJAX, significant scripting experience in Tcl/Perl/PHP and JavaScript, and open-source Linux environments
– Significant experience with database-driven design, in particular Oracle PL/SQL, SQL performance tuning, and general Unix systems operation
– Experience in the full lifecycle of large, hosted web application development, from requirements analysis and design through QA and post- production support
– Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, good communicator
– Practical experience in debugging, performance tuning, report generation involving web-based systems
– Demonstrated experience adhering to coding standards and best engineering practice.
– Communicate and collaborate with team members and other departments.
– Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
– Must have legal right to work in the US
