Inside SparkSpace - Hybrid Coworking Meets Angel Investing
Coworking is really starting to gain steam here in NYC. We met with Sunshine Suites a few weeks ago, there’s Jelly and NewWorkCity is coming soon.
Now there’s a new hybrid space named SparkSpace in Manhattan which is aimed at taking companies from pre-incubator all the way through the big time. Mary Kathleen Flynn, of TheDeal.com’s Tech Confidential, interviewed David Rose and took a toor of the space. I’ve embedded the video below. Looks pretty interesting - everything in one building and you move on up as the company moves on up.
Nate Westhimer, RoseTech Ventures entrepreneur in residence has some additional details on SparkSpace.
Last year I wrote several articles about coworking and, in one of them, I suggested that a VC-sponsored coworking spot would work very nicely. Many of the coworking gurus didn’t like the idea. I guess we will be able to see how it works in action now.

I think the word “coworking” is rightly protected by its founders; this is why we’re calling it “startup coworking” or “coworking for startups.” We say coworking because we’re students of the movement and big fans of it. New Yorkers know that I’ve been very vocal about it. But then the word “startup” is in there because we can’t do it all, and David Rose’s center is the perfect place to offer something specifically to startups.
I definitely think there’s room in the coworking world for a “startup coworking” space, just like there’s room in the startup world for coworking.
Sure reminds me of school, in that as you move up to a higher level, you move up to a higher portion of the school building (we were in a building). Similar concept by SparkSpace, only this time it’s the corporate world that’s involved. Same old, same old.
What an interesting concept by SparkSpace. Theirs appear to be a motivational key for the startup businesses to do well, to be able to advance literally to higher ground.
