What Do You Do Differently?
During my corporate years, one of the taglines the company used for a number of years was, "It’s What We Do Differently That Makes Us Better". To me "differently" always meant figuring out creative solutions to problems and issues. Differently can mean lots of things…innovation on the backend or how you handle processes that interact with your customer/user. Differently many times also equals a higher top of mind awareness which can provide a better rate of return.
Here’s a video from a flight attendant on Southwest providing the normal flight instructions in a differentiated way. How many people on that flight told at least one person about the flight attendant? How many bad days did he fix (at least momentarily)?
What are you doing at your startup to be differentiated?
Hat tip to Susan Beebe.

Made me smile. Brilliant.
Allen – Excellent example. Too many people think being better IS their “different” and it isn’t enough to capture imagination. Even IBM last night (saw you at the TweetUp as I was leaving, apologies for not saying hello) was being a little different (from the uber-corporate brethren) by hosting a TweetUp just to get the conversation going and not making it about themselves.
Hey Allen!
Thanks for the “hat tip” on this really great video. However, I must give credit where credit is due. I actually learned of this via @ChrisBrogan.
See original tweet by @ChrisBrogan (notice he saw it from @JanJane) http://twitter.com/chrisbrogan/status/1379288639
Here’s my retweet of Chris’ tweet, “@susanbeebe “RT @chrisbrogan: best flight attendant ever http://tinyurl.com/c26svr (via @JanJane) video — hahah Chris that is awesome!! LOL :)”
Glad you enjoyed it too. Refreshing take on an otherwise incredibly boring regurgitation of airplane pre-flight process / policies.
I hope we see more folks think outside of the box like this!
Cheers!

There is a 3level limit in effect…
The real key to this video is a few things…
- the flight attendant can be creative and enjoys his job a pinch more
- the pax get a moment of a smile
we need to see more of this everywhere – from how we deal with each other to how we run our companies – i can only imagine this type of behavior in the corporate world – imagine how much more people might actually enjoy what they do
Allen,
So true! I too welcome this sort of creativity in corporate America. We’ve become entirely too stale and process driven to the point where folks are not inspired, innovative or even productive. This video is a prime example of taking something entirely mundane and spicing it up with some well needed “energy”!!
