"How to Move Mount Fuji" is a book about the brainteasers that Microsoft gives to potential employees. One of the things it talks about is why they bother with this stuff when it's not even directly related to programming.

Microsoft would rather pass up on 10 great candidates than hire 1 bad candidate. Once you hire a bad egg they're extremely difficult to get rid of and they can negatively effect the morale of the others.

So the lesson is, if you're on the fence about someone, it's probably safer to pass on them and wait for someone who's great. At least, that's what Microsoft would do.

I would also add that when hiring someone, try to make sure he loves what he does. Experience is nothing compared to having passion.

Though our outfit can't be considered strictly as a startup (working remotely since last few years), we have recently setup an office are recruiting on-site staff, and yes, its really difficult to find passionate talent that agrees to work with you :(
