Startup Tips MonthDay #30 in the CenterNetworks Startup Tips Month comes from the CenterNetworks readers.

  • Be sure to read a lot of startup tips, but dont take them too seriously or get nervous about breaking them.
  • Music can help boost your work levels and reduce stress. Music lets you focus on the task while reducing the stress of actually completing the task. Alternate the styles of music you listen to and see which helps the best.
  • Drink a lot... of water that is. Keep yourself moist and your body will thank you. 10-12 large glasses a day (more if you are heavy) and stay away from too many alcoholic drinks.
  • Believe in Yourself: No matter what, you need to believe in yourself. Without this belief, you won't be able to survive. If you have a passion for something, embrace that passion. If you have instincts about something, follow them. Don't doubt yourself. When you make decisions, don't look back. Even when others don't believe in you, you must believe in yourself.
  • Know Yourself: Nobody knows you better than you. Know your strengths, and trust them; also know your weaknesses, and fix them.
  • Know your weaknesses. Hire for your weaknesses and they will complement your strengths. If you focus on improving your weaknesses, you might miss out on something great.
  • Surround Yourself: with the right people. Surround yourself with people smarter than yourself. If you do this, you will constantly increase the value (and IQ) of your company. As I said before, you must believe in yourself but also know yourself. If you have a weakness, find the right person to fill that gap.
  • Trust Your Colleagues: Know that the people you hire and work with adhere to the other tips here. If they don't you should not be working with them. If they do, then trust them. Foster this, and you create an environment that breeds success.
  • Get away from the computer regularly. Even though we are connected 24x7 to the Internet does not mean that a few hours away will hurt the progress of your product or service. In fact, the time away might give you the chance to think about things you normally can't when handcuffed to the desk.
  • Don't let your emotions take hold. Keep them in check and if you feel like they are taking over, get out for a walk or a jog. If you let your emotions control the startup, it will be doomed for failure.
  • Network everywhere. Is there a biz card board at your local supermarket? Put up a card. Give your card out everywhere as you never know who it will get passed to.
  • Backup your work in several places if possible. This is an absolute must if you are coding on the server. How much will it cost if your data is lost? And test your backups! Backups lie!
