The Absolute Most Awesome Google Maps Mashup Ever
We’ve seen lots of great mashups over the years using Google Maps, but today a friend passed me along what I believe is the most awesome one yet. I am a huge subway/metro/bahn fan and this mashup takes the Swiss train routes and plots in real-time the trains and they actually MOVE along their routes.
As shown on the left, you can select a train and then follow it along its journey using the bird’s eye view via satellite images and the train just keeps moving and stops at it’s stations that are shown in the schedule on the right. Trains are shown by their type and stations are shown either as terminals or pass-thru stations. Not only can you find out what trains are arriving next to a station, but you can click on a train to find out more information about its route, station stops and timing.
I could see this type of mashup replacing the older systems that truckers use. Slap a GPS on each truck as it moves around town or across the country and then a system administrator can monitor locations from anywhere and make sure each is moving according to schedule.
If there aren’t anymore posts on CN today, you now know why.
What other Google Maps mashups are your favorites?

[...] we will see more cool visualizations of transit usage, more apps like Exit Strategy, and more mashups that track trains and their travels. I’d also love to see a transit camp here in NYC as long as the MTA [...]

We have this to monitor the bus movements. Based on this we can go to the bus stop to catch the buses. It is very effective, but is not implemented with Google Maps. http://ncsu.transloc-inc.com/
I nominate my startup (http://www.otherweather.com) as a better mashup than this ;)
Allen, this is another great mashup. But this one really IS realtime.
This project was a diplom work and tracks planes with a device on it. On top of the ZHAW school building is a radar to track the signals.

Hmm… looks like it is down at the moment. Anyway, cool project :-)
