SXSW: The Bats and the Birds
Here in Austin, there are the bats! Yes, there are bats in Austin – actually there are millions of bats underneath the Congress Avenue bridge. They fly out from under the bridge at dusk, and fly to many of the croplands in the Austin area and eat thousands of pounds of insects each evening. Apparently the bats actually help the crops by eating the insects. I am going to try to get some video of the bats.
Then there’s the birds. While I haven’t been able to find any specific information about the birds, each year I have attended SXSW, the birds are here. At about 5pm (when they get off work?), they hang out in the trees all over downtown and make their sounds. There must be tens of thousands of birds. I captured a quick video of the birds near my hotel. While the bats eat insects, what I hear is that the birds eat bad and evil tech bloggers.

The giant flocks of birds in Austin are called Grackles. They are flying rats and are destroying all urban areas of Texas. Dallas has them pretty bad, but Austin is just insane. Because of the federal migratory bird regulations, little to nothing can be done about this overabundant pest.
